Warrior Limited Edition Cabin Fever Hockey Collection Review

Get ready for the holiday season—or perhaps the Halloween season?—with Warrior’s new limited edition Cabin Fever Hockey Collection. Featuring a ton of retro graphics, Easter eggs, and nods to both the upcoming winter season with some fall and Halloween flair, you won’t want to skip out on this one.

Gear Lineup

The Cabin Fever collection extends from hockey to lacrosse, though this article will primarily focus on hockey and apparel available at The Hockey Shop.

  • Sticks

  • Gloves

  • Hats

  • Bags

Though each item carries its own design quirks, we noticed while surveying the collection that there are several Easter eggs throughout, offering hidden nods to either history or even other Cabin Fever pieces in the lineup.

Warrior Cabin Fever Collection Equipment Family - Covert

You might be surprised to hear that the Cabin Fever collection is actually part of Warrior’s Covert equipment family and offers the same tech as the equipment you’ll find there.

“Covert” means hidden or secret, as in a covert operation. You’ve probably heard the term before in various media, particularly when spies and secrets are involved. That same stealth mindset is what Warrior’s Covert equipment family brings to the ice. With a slogan like strike before they react, the Covert series puts speed and reactivity above all.

Covert is designed for players who like to act first and think about the play later. That means a low kick, a close feel on the fit, and an overall wide range of motion.

Halloween Season? The Meaning of "Cabin Fever"

If you’re a horror movie enthusiast, you’ve probably heard of the term cabin fever, which is a common theme in many winter horror movies. Movies like The Shining, The Lodge, and The Thing all use cabin fever as either a theme or main driving force for the conflict. But what is “cabin fever”?

Well, it’s not exactly about being stuck in a remote cabin during a snowstorm and going insane… but it’s close. Although not an official medical diagnosis, cabin fever refers to the emotions and symptoms developed from being isolated and deprived of connection and stimulation for an extended period of time, and often within an isolated area. Many people experienced cabin fever during the COVID-19 pandemic while social distancing. These emotions are not positive—that loneliness and stress can make you anxious, on edge, irritable, and fatigued.

Warrior’s Cabin Fever Collection is both a nod to the common winter Halloween trope and a healthy call to action. The gear and apparel are all meant to be worn outside or at the rink, reminding you to get out there and enjoy both the Halloween and holiday seasons.

Sticks

The gear is available in both player stick and goalie stick varieties.

Player Stick

The player stick is made with Covert QR7 Pro technology, and beyond the tech, this is one extremely nice-looking stick.

The bottom and middle of the shaft use a black base with the carbon fibre visible, which is pretty standard on most modern sticks. It’s the top shaft that has us excited—it not only has a “wood-like” appearance, but it’s textured along the grooves as well. No grip here, just wood. An older Warrior stamp logo has also been placed on the top shaft, complete with an old Warrior logo that some long-time enthusiasts may recognize.

The neat colours don’t end there, either. The text logos along the bottom and middle of the shaft are also coloured in a deep red plaid and the same wood colours, and we’re a bit obsessed with how these colours look on the QR7 Pro logo itself too.

Right in the middle of the carbon fibre section are the Cabin Fever logos, including the rope-design text logo and a patch-like design that you’ll also find on the goal stick and gloves. The Covert line designs have also been altered not just as spikes or lines, but as trees.

You’ll notice that between where the stick changes from a textured “wood” design to modern composite, there’s a silver band. The band mimics how, back in the day, they used to add stronger reinforcements between where parts of the stick were joined. This isn’t actually the case with this stick—but it’s nice to see some nostalgic nods to older technology.

Goalie Stick

Like the player stick, the goalie stick variation uses Covert series technology, with designs that truly transport you back to the past.

The patterns in general are very similar to the player stick, with black as the main base and a tan, wood-like top shaft. More of the shaft on the goal stick is in this wood pattern, though the texture has been watered down to keep it easy to slide through your hand. Like the player stick, the Warrior logo on the paddle switches from a deep red plaid to a wood-like pattern, depending on the side you’re looking at. The goal stick is a bit different on the top of the shaft, however, since the wood design is also much longer on this variation. On the shaft, the Warrior logo switches from plaid to white. The “wood” section has the same designs as on the player stick, with lines mimicking how they used to reinforce certain joints with tape.

At the junction between the paddle and the shaft, the goal stick actually uses the same type of graphic as seen on the player stick, rather than what you might find on other Covert goalie sticks. With this design choice, though, they are able to keep the same tree graphics in the lines. Underneath is the Cabin Fever logo as well, showing the same winter landscape as the other hockey gear.

Bear in mind that the stick is noticeably heavier than most current sticks on the market, but it will certainly feel familiar if you miss that old-school, wooden feeling on your goalie stick. Unlike many current stock sticks, the goalie variation also does not have any geometry changes on either the shaft or the paddle, instead opting for a more traditional, rounded-edge square shape.

Gloves

There are two variations of the glove: the QR7 and the QR7T. The glove does not come in a QR7 Pro model.

Although they do appear and feel different, there are some key similarities they share from being part of the Warrior Covert gear family, notably the Covert Taper fit (anatomical and contoured), the AxyFlex thumb, and Buttersoft feel. Both gloves also use Dual-Layer foams, though of varying quality.

Remember that it’s always important to feel the gloves on your hands first before buying to make sure you’re getting the right fit. You can find more detailed descriptions on each glove by following the links.

Tech Differences

QR7 Glove

The QR7 is a second-price-point glove with a good amount of Warrior’s top glove technology. It uses EXO+ Duo-Lam foam, which basically means there are two layers of HD VN and mid-density foam. This glove also uses a Pro Palm X, an extremely comfortable palm material complete with Ax Suede and an embossed grip. The QR7 will have a very professional feel to it when trying it on.

In terms of tech, the Cabin Fever variant doesn’t differ drastically from the original glove at all. The only differences appear cosmetic, such as the use of leather on Cabin Fever overlays compared to TPU plastic on the standard glove. One interesting “tech” difference is also in the first two fingers and around the thumb, where your stick would make the most contact. The original uses a tougher nylon in this area, likely for cosmetic purposes and durability. On the Cabin Fever variant, however, these fingers are covered in more AX Suede, for a softer, more homey feel.

QR7T Glove

The QR7T, also known as the QR7 Team variant, is a more budget-friendly version of the QR7. It features a simpler Duo-Lam foam and Pro palm, and has a more traditional feel to it when putting it on. This style is called “Team” because it is typically the type of glove that teams would order in bulk for their players. The palm does not use AX Suede.

I’m not sure if it’s just the gloves I tested out, but the Cabin Fever variant feels just a bit softer out of the box than the standard QR7T, though neither should require any kind of break-in period. The softer feel might be because the Cabin Fever variant appears to use the same inside padding as the QR7. This glove also uses leather on the inside cuff and AX Suede around some of the fingers, same as the QR7.

Colour Variants

Overall Graphics and the Tan Variant

The tan variant of the QR7 really plays into the homey, rustic feel of the collection. On the QR7, wherever the normal cuff uses TPU overlays, the Cabin Fever version uses tanned leather (likely not real leather, but still a leather texture that can survive the physical nature of ice hockey). The sheer number of small details on this glove made my jaw drop at how clever it all was.

The leather on the inner cuff is embossed with mountain artwork over the Covert logo, while leather on the other side has also been detailed with “Cabin Fever.” That’s not all there is to the inside cuff either—the inside liner has been coloured with red plaid, completing the rustic lumberjack look.

The emboss on the palm has also been changed to a cabin graphic, complete with trees, mountains, and even what appears to be an outdoor ice rink. The Warrior logo sits stylistically in the back, like a sun. The Warrior logo on the thumb has been switched out with a brand-new, retro-style logo, with an axe on a log and sewn in like a patch.

My absolute favourite part of the design though, has to be the TPU details over the AX Suede fingers. On the original glove, it looked almost like spikes, following along the fingers; on the Cabin Fever, like it was with the sticks, these details have been shaped deliberately to look like trees.

The QR7T is very similar stylistically, though there are a few differences. The thumb logo is the same, but made of TPU and not a sewn-in patch. The cuff still includes leather on one side, while the side with the “Cabin Fever” writing is nylon. This variant includes more black than tan, notably on the inner cuff and the palm, and there are no trees in the finger designs. Most everything else is the same, though, even the padding and liners along the inside cuff.

Black Variant

Of course, this wouldn’t be the Covert series without a covert black version of the glove. This variant is for the player who may love the designs of the tan version but wants something more subtle. The leather portions are still there on both gloves, just now switched to black, with some designs also changed to grey, like the TPU on the QR7T. The AX Suede is a light grey on this variation.

The “Cabin Fever” text is a different colour, depending on which glove variant you pick up; on the QR7T, the text is grey, while it is a light tan on the QR7.

Like the tan version of the QR7T, the palm on the black variant is also black. The QR7, however, has a light grey palm, keeping all the AX Suede matching.

Hats

Warrior included a solid variety of hats in this collection, including trucker hats, toques, and a wool snapback. All are One Size Fits Many.

Wool Hat

It may sound like this hat is a toque, or maybe even a bucket hat, but it’s actually a really soft snapback. The wool hat is made with a blend of wool (50%) and polyester (50%), giving it that soft, felt-like texture throughout the shell and brim. It’s a snapback, which means it uses a plastic snap closure on the back.

The sewn-in leather patch on the front of the hat has an embossed cabin graphic, and you may have noticed too that it’s the same image as the one on the hockey glove. Interestingly, the lake within the landscape on the wool hat appears to have melted, indicating it to be summer or spring (on the glove, there are skate marks, indicating ice in the winter).

Trucker Hats

The trucker hat comes in two variations: orange and burgundy. Both are made with cotton over the front of the shell and polyester on the back. A small cotton rope lines the shell where it’s attached to the brim of the hat, but this rope isn’t long enough to use as any kind of chin strap or attachment.

Each has the same style for the most part, though the colours are a little different. On the burgundy hat, the logo and rope are yellow; on the orange hat, they are white.

The logo on the front isn’t exactly a sewn-in patch, but appears partially embroidered. It depicts the retro-like “Warrior Sports” logo, without the axe and tree stump seen in other gear and apparel.

Toques / Beanies

These hats are listed as “beanies” by Warrior—but we’re Canadian here, and we know a toque when we see one. These hats are made of 100% acrylic but are still extremely soft. They come in three colourways: black, mocha, and orange, and all have the same sewn-in patch.

Bags

The bags come in two distinct colourways: Cabin Fever Tan and Scarlett, and are made mostly of nylon, making them extremely durable. Inside, you’ll find a few pockets for organizing smaller items. They come in coaching bag size and SR player bag size, so make sure you're looking at the correct one if you are wanting to pick one up for yourself.

Final Thoughts - Is This Gear Right for You?

We’re huge fans of all the little Easter eggs and nods this collection gives to other pieces, history, and the holidays. If you’re a fan too, then the gear is certainly worth a look.

The gear is all part of the Covert series, so if you are more of an agility- and speed-focused player, then you’ll definitely benefit from the equipment. The only piece of gear that might be a bit different in that regard is the goalie stick, which, although it does use Covert technology, is more of a recreational, nostalgic stick rather than elite or performance-level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play hockey with this gear?

Yes, the hockey gear is all fully functional and can be used on the ice.

What gear is the equipment based on?

The Cabin Fever collection hockey gear is a limited edition colourway of the current equipment models, using the same technology:

  • Stick = Covert QR7 Pro

  • Gloves = Covert QR7 and QR7T (two different variations)

  • Goalie stick = Covert QR series

The equipment will indicate on the gear itself which technology it uses, so make sure to check the labels before buying.
