CCM Axis Goal Pads on-ice Review

Our First ice time with the new Axis Leg Pads

To ring in the new decade, CCM brings us the all-new Axis line of equipment. This line not only waves goodbye to Premier but also parts ways with Lefevre as their gear designer as they move all production overseas. This new line brings in a ton of major improvements and features to bring out the best in any goalie who wears them. Sporting a thinner, lighter and stiffer core than the Premier 2’s as well as a harder face to launch rebounds out of danger zones, these pads improve on each desired aspect of the stiff pad line.

L1TEXCORE Technology

CCM has upgraded the core of the pad to make it lighter and stiffer, while also creating a thinner profile to improve mobility. While making the new core, they redesigned the curve of the pad as well as using a soft-flex 90-degree boot for an enhanced range of motion and butterfly coverage.

Max Rebound+ Technology

The Axis pads have replaced some of the classic HD and SD foams with their Max Rebound+ Technology which promotes a lightweight core while creating the most aggressive rebounds yet. This foam is designed to return to the original state even faster than the Premier 2 Max Rebound Tech, sending rebounds as far as possible from the crease to give you extra time to get set before the next shot.

Quick Motion Strapping

The leg channel sports minor improvements throughout, sticking with the Quick Motion Strapping system, the upgrades include adjustments to the knee wing and calf strap for easier use and adjustment. The design allows for efficient strapping while promoting smooth pad rotation and a customizable fit. Along with the QMSS, the pad has an optional bootstrap and CCMs bungee toe string system, accommodating a forgiving boot and ankle mobility.

3D Grip Knee Cradle

The knee cradle continues to sport a recessed foam style to help close the 5-hole. CCM has also included a 3D grip, injected-moulded EPP foam for an impressive pad seal while allowing for a soft landing when dropping into the butterfly. The HD raised flat inside edge design increases stability when landing and sliding.

Customization

The Axis leg pads showcase an in-depth design to create a super fun customizer. With the use of UV Printing, Hexa Print and Graphic Zones on the SpeedSkin, there are endless details that add an innovative, personalized style to this pad. Try your hand at designing the pad when CCM releases its customizer this Spring.

Final Thoughts

When trying the Axis goalie line on the ice, I enjoyed the improvements made by CCM. The first thing I noticed was the thin profile and how light the pads were. Having owned Premier 2 pads at one point, I did notice some similarities in the much-improved playstyle of the pads. The rebounds were bigger than I could’ve anticipated and I truly did feel more stable on the ice, which helped me move faster and make cross-crease saves that I couldn’t have made before. Overall, Axis shows the promising future of what CCM has in-store for us.
