CCM Axis 1.9 Blocker & Trapper Review
Let’s talk about the new A1.9 series from CCM. A step down from the Pro level Axis model, the A1.9 offers terrific value. The Axis line gives CCM a nice revamp where we see many minor changes as well as some major ones. Probably the biggest change for CCM was internally as they now have parted ways with their gear designer Lefevre. All CCM production will now be overseas including gear made for the NHLer’s. The new CCM Axis line is set to be CCM’s biggest goalie release in years, as this will be the first time they are releasing an entirely new line since the Extreme Flex line debuted 7 years ago.
CCM Axis 1.9 Trapper
The Axis 1.9 trapper remains much the same as the Premier 2.9, but as many say, “if it’s not broke don’t fix it.” This is referring to CCM’s impressive line of gloves, the Axis features the same 590-degree break that was featured on the Premier 1 and 2 lines. The 590 break is very popular at many different levels from goalies all over, and the Axis 1.9 will keep that tradition strong and hopefully get many more into it as well. CCM also does make some minor changes allowing for a better overall closure.
Axis 1.9 Pocket T
Just like the Premier 2 the Axis 1.9 will feature a double-T pocket. The double-T offers a different style than the traditional single-T, the double-T is designed to work like a cushion the idea that more lacing and a larger catching surface will allow the glove lacing to absorb much more of the power from the shot resulting in less pop outs. The double-T also allows for better vision when catching and covering the puck.
Internals
As mentioned earlier one of the things CCM focused on was trying to make a more game ready glove. Personally, I still think there is room for improvement but definitely making steps in the right direction. To achieve this CCM used their layered felt/foam system trying to get the glove closer to being ready right out of the box. The palm of the glove will be lined with CCM’s comfortable Nash material. The glove will also again feature CCM’s Velcro palm and finger strapping as well as their quick release webbing wrist strap for quick customization.
Source Exclusive (SDC) Features
For our source exclusive version of the 1.9 glove, we have made a few exciting changes to the stock models to give a nice upgrade to the line. The stock glove will feature a palm made up of layered felt and foam, and as an add-on for our SDC exclusive version it will also have CCM’s 4th generation of the D3O material. D3O is featured in all of CCM’s pro level products, as it is their top-level impact protection foam that hardens upon impact. It is a large upgrade from the stock version. Another change we made was we switched the glove T to a single-T which allows for more of a snap feeling when closing the glove, as well we changed the nylon lacing to the skate lace for more of a cushion in the pocket for less pop outs. Lastly, we will have our custom fleet of colors to give many color options to any goalie out there.
Blocker Board
Using laminated dual density foam with PE, this allows for ultimate control and direction when directing the puck away. This will also increase the power of the rebounds, giving more recovery time. The blocker also features their stiff sidewall with curved finger protection. The curved finger protection is a carryover from the Premier 2 line giving you maximum protection on those pucks that roll up your stick. CCM also has been able to shave off some weight for the new blocker by making the blocker face roughly half an inch thinner for the best performance.
3-Piece Cuff
Featured is the new 3-piece cuff from CCM. The 3-piece cuff is a huge upgrade in my opinion the new cuff allows for maximum wrist flexibility and freedom of movement. Personally, I did not like the 1-piece cuff that was on the Premier 2 model, as I felt the old cuff was very restricting so for myself, I feel the new 3-piece cuff was a massive upgrade.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the CCM Axis line is going to be a much needed and anticipated revamp. But for those of you who loved the Premier line, I can promise you won’t be disappointed the lighter more responsive blocker is a nice upgrade and you still get to use that iconic CCM 590 break.
