To ring in 2020, CCM introduces the new Axis line and moves away from Lefevre and the Premier line. Along with the Axis, CCM introduces the Axis 1.9 and Axis 1.5 as their senior and entry-level pad. Featuring a new flex profile, redesigned boot and lighter core, this pad is sure to impress and perform for any level.
The first key piece of technology in this pad is the new LITEXCORE technology. CCM’s pro core used on the Axis Pro pad, has now been added to their senior level pad, the Axis 1.9. This core has been upgraded from that used on the Premier 2, being thinner to cut weight and the flex profile is a pre-curved, single inner, no outer break, allowing for a much stiffer pad. CCM has also redesigned the boot to be 90 degrees soft flex rather than the 60 degree boot used on the premier.
The leg channel on the Axis 1.9 aims for a loose fit, accommodating easy pad rotation. The knee cradle features recessed foam with a removable wrap, as well as a 3D grip knee raiser allowing for comfort and stability in the butterfly. These features along with the new HD raised flat inside edge design allow for a perfect seal and easy movements while remaining comfortable for the user.
Quick Motion Strapping
CCM improves the quick motion strapping, adapting minor features from the Eflex 4 pads. The all velcro style with adjustable straps enables anybody to get that perfect, customized fit. CCM also includes their bungee toe string system, which provides a forgiving boot and ankle mobility. The quick motion strapping system is designed for simplicity, speed and rotation, improving any goalies experience in the dressing room and on the ice.
While CCM uses speedskin on all their pads, the Axis line brings in new features including UV printing, Hexaprint and graphic zones. Whether you love the look or hate it, these pads pack a lot of design specs. These pads come in an array of colours, including white, black, red and blue colour ways.
After trying these pads, I was most impressed with the quality, despite being a senior level pad, the Axis 1.9 played and felt like a pro pad. The sliding was a major improvement over CCM’s previous stiff pad line, as well as the stiff profile which helped me feel solid in my butterfly. The face of the pad is much harder, providing that pop you need to launch the puck away from your crease, one of my favourite aspects. Overall, this pad is a major step in the right direction for CCM and I personally prefer the AXIS 1.9 over my previous Premier 2 pads due to the upgrades in play style, which helped me feel more confident in every save.
