Intro & New Features
New to 2024 is the SLR4 Intermediate chest and arm protection from Vaughn. With an emphasis on protection for the butterfly goalie, this chest protector features Aero-spacer mesh sleeves, an extra-large flexible belly flap, cushion air and HD foam padding, and four-point adjustable elbow pads. The SLR4 series is perfect for young butterfly goalies looking to bump up their game to the next level.
External Material
The SLR4 chest pad exterior is made of nylon mesh for excellent durability and flexibility. The strong nylon weave holds the pads together while adding good ventilation all around. An extra-large belly flap was added to the front to increase blocking and protection in that area.
Internal Foams
Vaughn outfitted the SLR4 Intermediate chest and arm protector with high-end HD foam padding all around, including in the arms, sides, and spine. Cushion air padding was added in the shoulder floaters to create a good buffer for making saves. The sides were given an extension padding to keep the ribs and kidney area safe.
Shoulder Caps
The SLR4 Intermediate chest pads have an increased surface area in the shoulder floaters across the front for better blocking. The shoulder floaters are also adjustable in their positioning, so young goalies can customize where they want them when they play. The shoulders themselves are light and protective, ideal characteristics for butterfly goalies, who will benefit greatly from the extra height and weight reduction.
Adjustable Arms
The arms of the SLR4 feature four adjustment points in the back by the elbows to tweak their fit, depending on the level of snugness you want. The wrists have straps to fix them to the goalie’s wrist shape as well. Aero-spacer mesh sleeves contribute to good air ventilation and flexibility, and the material additionally makes the sleeves easier to break in.
Elbow Caps
The SLR4 is equipped with four-point adjustable elbow pads for a snug fit while keeping a good range of motion. The side elbow caps are molded to fit with the no-gap main arm floaters for the same effect.
Back Straps
The velcro dual back strap is new to the SLR series and makes it easier to modify the size of the pads and get them fitted closer. The spine padding has been reinforced with HD foam protection.
Sizes & Colors
The Vaughn Ventus SLR4 Intermediate Chest & Arm Protector comes in Black/Green/White colouration and the following sizes: Medium, Large, X-Large.

Goalie Chest Protector Sizing
Sizing a chest protector is important to ensure the goaltenders range of motion is uninhibited, while still offering complete coverage from impact. There are steps necessary to finding the right fit in your chest protector, and the first is to know your measurements. Here at The Hockey Shop, we like to use two measurements: torso length and arm span. Once you have these two measurements, match your measurements to our sizing charts.
Sizing your Chest Protector
After receiving your chest protector, you are going to want to check if the size fits the following criteria:
- 1. The arms end just before your wrist. This is important because you want to ensure that the wrist portion of the arms do not interfere with your blocker and catcher—this still provides adequate growing room for the blocker and trapper, which usually last you 1 to 2 years. Depending on the model, adjustable arms may be an offered feature, which is an added bonus for goaltenders that are still growing.
2. Your elbows fit securely in to the pocket of the elbow protection, and do not shift too far away from them. Keep in mind, arms usually have to be adjusted while putting on your chest & arm. Use the adjustable arm features where given to give you an optimal fit.
3. Make sure the shoulders of the chest & arm are sitting comfortably atop, and wrapped around your shoulders. This can be seen visually by looking at the collar of the chest & arm. You want the collar to sit slightly above your clavicle, but not too high that it interferes with the bottom of your goalie mask.
Each brand of chest & arms will have not only a different shape, but also a slightly different fit. We highly recommend having one of our Goalie Specialists to assist you in optimizing the fit of your Chest Protector. If you can't make it into the store, give us a call so we can walk you through it.
