The Vaughn Ventus SLR knee pads are goalie knee protection worn under the leg pads, covering the gap between the top of the pad and the bottom of the pants. They guard the kneecap and the lower thigh, which is exactly where pucks find you when you drop into the butterfly. Any goalie taking real shots wants a dedicated pad here rather than trusting the leg pad knee cradle alone.
Protection is split into two zones. The thigh section is moulded plastic over multi-layered internal foam, so a direct hit gets spread across the panel instead of landing in one spot. The knee section is contoured and profiled to sit close to the kneecap, which keeps bulk down so the knee pad does not push your leg pad out of position.
An elastic connection joins the knee and thigh sections, so the pad flexes with you as you go down and get back up rather than folding or sliding out of place. Adjustable knee and thigh straps set the tension, and grip strips on the upper thigh elastic keep the pad from creeping down your leg over the course of a game.
This is a low-profile design, so expect it to sit closer to the leg than an older bulky knee pad. It comes in one intermediate size, with the straps handling the rest of the fit.
