Intro & New Features

The Vaughn VX1 chest protector is a part of the Velocity line for the 2025 season. Designed with maximum protection and support in mind, it features many key specs to make it a reliable protector for young goalies including molded shoulder and arm protection, segmented shoulder floaters, and a new design that provides greater chest and belly coverage.

External Material

The VX1 chest protector is made up of nylon mesh which is designed for excellent durability and flexibility. The strong nylon weave holds the pads together while adding good ventilation all-around. The design of the chest protector gives greater chest and belly coverage and includes a higher chest pad neck line padding.

Internal Foams

Inside the protector, Vaughn added HD foams to keep young goalies protected from impacts in all areas including the arms, spine, and sides. Cushion air padding was added in the shoulder floaters to create a good buffer when making saves. The sides were given an extension padding to keep the ribs and kidney area safe.

Shoulder Caps

Up to the shoulders, Vaughn added molded shoulder caps when creating this protector. The shoulder caps feature HD foams to provide protection from impacts and keep them secured on the ice. There are also segmented shoulder floaters on the protector to provide an additional level of protection.

Arm Protection

Down to the arms, there is molded foams to keep the forearm and bicep protected. This design allows goalies to be protected from impacts and have coverage that follows them with each movement they make.

Elbow Caps

The elbows are covered with side elbow impact protection. When adjusted correctly, the elbow will sit in the pocket and will have coverage all around it for maximum protection and keeping goalies supported from impacts.

Goalie Chest Protector Sizing

Sizing a chest protector is important to ensure the goaltenders range of motion is uninhibited, while still offering complete coverage from impact. There are steps necessary to finding the right fit in your chest protector, and the first is to know your measurements. Here at The Hockey Shop, we like to use two measurements: torso length and arm span. Once you have these two measurements, match your measurements to our sizing charts.

Sizing your Chest Protector

After receiving your chest protector, you are going to want to check if the size fits the following criteria:

    1. The arms end just before your wrist. This is important because you want to ensure that the wrist portion of the arms do not interfere with your blocker and catcher—this still provides adequate growing room for the blocker and trapper, which usually last you 1 to 2 years. Depending on the model, adjustable arms may be an offered feature, which is an added bonus for goaltenders that are still growing.

    2. Your elbows fit securely in to the pocket of the elbow protection, and do not shift too far away from them. Keep in mind, arms usually have to be adjusted while putting on your chest & arm. Use the adjustable arm features where given to give you an optimal fit.

    3. Make sure the shoulders of the chest & arm are sitting comfortably atop, and wrapped around your shoulders. This can be seen visually by looking at the collar of the chest & arm. You want the collar to sit slightly above your clavicle, but not too high that it interferes with the bottom of your goalie mask.

Each brand of chest & arms will have not only a different shape, but also a slightly different fit. We highly recommend having one of our Goalie Specialists to assist you in optimizing the fit of your Chest Protector. If you can't make it into the store, give us a call so we can walk you through it.
