The Vaughn ION Select Leg Pads are new from Vaughn along with their 2026 Goalie protective line. The pads are equipped with full pro spec domestic construction that provides optimal performance, and flat smooth inner edge that provides faster on ice movements, allowing goalies to slide easier from post-to-post.
External Material
The ION Select leg pads take advantage of Vaughn’s renowned Canadian made quality. Using the best materials on the market, the ION Select uses a durable leather face combined with a QuickSlide slide surface and toe binding for superior slide and durability in high wear areas. A soft, comfortable Nash-like material lines the knee block, upper calf and instep leading into the calf wrap made of a breathable, durable nylon interior with a lightweight mesh exterior.
Internal Construction
Similar to previous years of Vaughn leg pads, the ION Select features a traditional three knee roll design, and it includes Carbon Core Technology which provides a higher level of performance. However, the core of the ION Select has been redesigned to be thinner, lighter and to give off harder, more active rebounds.
Designed with a pre-shaped design for a precision fit and pad control, these leg pads are built to be flexible while providing protection in all key areas. The beveled outside roll with a low profile provides additional flexibility while further reducing the overall weight of the pad.
Pad Break
These pads feature a solid outside roll with no break at the knee, a popular choice among butterfly style goalies. This construction offers maximum rigidity for a wide butterfly flare, a tight seal on the ice, and highly predictable, hard rebounds that clear the puck away from the crease. This holds the overall shape of the pad and maximizes coverage when dropping into the butterfly.
Knee Cradle
The knee cradle of these leg pads see a widened knee landing area for improved integration with knee pads of all sizes. A new feature on these pads is the inner knee block ties into the pad core for added pad control, while the open knee cradle provides quicker pad rotations, allowing easier movements. Additionally, the wide leg cradle provides firm leg support, keeping the leg pad and protection in place.
Boot Angle & Toe Taper
The toe on the ION Select pad features a taper allowing for superior mobility and recovery pushed while not sacrificing any seal or coverage. The newly added scoop area with a larger angle provides better post interaction and push offs.
Strapping
The ION Select features a redesigned strapping system and calf wrap allowing for a simpler, quicker, and lighter system. Vaughn uses a velcro Reactive Rotation Control strap that sits on the upper calf to allow for quicker yet more controlled pad rotation while giving the pad a connected feel. The calf wrap uses a single velcro strap to seal its extended wings that offer better coverage over previous iterations of Vaughn pads.
While still having a fairly tight fitting leg channel, the ION Select has a widened inner leg cradle overall when compared to previous years of leg pads, giving goalies the feel of a tight fitting leg channel while offering the better rotation associated with a looser leg channel. These pads feature a velcro bootstrap as well as the same bungee toe tie system seen on previous Vaughn leg pads.

Goalie Leg Pads Sizing
Deciding your Goalie Pads size is crucial for having total control while moving in the crease. Sizing your pads properly is the difference between getting that perfect seal on your butterfly, and feeling clunky or unprotected in the net. Below we have compiled some information to better assist you in deciding which size is right for you.
Floor-To-Knee Measurement
Your Floor-To-Knee measurement will give you a good indication as to what "Pad Size" you will need. This measurement can be matched up with the provided sizing chart above.
How to Measure your Floor-To-Knee
- 1. In your bare feet, place the soft measuring tape at the inside of the bottom of your foot.
2. Slightly bend your knee.
3. Run the soft measuring tape up your shin, to the middle of your knee.
4. Match your Floor-To-Knee measurement with the provided sizing chart
What to look for when trying on your new pads.
Once you have your new leg pads, you’ll need to make sure they fit you properly. To do so, you’ll need to put the pads on with your skates. There a couple things to do to check size, once you have the pads on:
1. Stand straight and bring your feet together. This will show you the overall height of the pad, while on. Your pads should not be taller than your hips. Ideally you want the top of your pad at the half-way point of your thighs. A pad fitted for a young growing goaltender can be a little taller, so a little above the half-way point is normal.
2. Next you want to get in your stance, keep your hands in a ready position, and drop to your butterfly. Without moving your legs to correct your butterfly, bring your heels together. This is where you assess your knee position. For a proper fit, you want the middle of your knee to sit directly on the center of the knee stack. If you’re looking for growing room, you want the middle of your knee to land roughly 1.5” below the center of the knee stack (1” for JR).
Not getting a complete seal while in your butterfly?
If you're having trouble getting a full seal in your new pads, it may be the way you’re strapping them up. Make sure your boot strap and top straps (above knee) are loosened up a bit. The reason you want these straps loose is because they have a direct effect on the rotation of the pad. Having a loose boot strap makes it easy for your foot and ankle to rotate as the pad moves. Same goes for the top straps, as you don't want them pulling down too hard on the thigh rise.
