The Vaughn ION Select chest protector is a part of the new ION line for the 2026 season. Designed with maximum protection and support in mind, it features many key specs to make it a reliable protector for goalies of all levels, including a chest that is designed to allow it to be worn inside or outside the pants. This design stays higher on the shoulder for increased blocking surface.
External Material
The ION Select chest protector exterior is made of high density foams that provide a lightweight feel with increased protection in key areas. The durable, HD foams provide goalies with protection from impacts by absorbing the contact and dispersing it so goalies can continue playing without getting injured.
Internal Foams
The padding inside the chest protector consists of many series of HD foams. The integrated sternum pad comes with HD foams & plastic inserts to absorb and reduce the force of impacts. The padding is designed to fit against the body and stay in one place, while also providing protection in all the critical areas.
Shoulder Caps
The shoulders are protected and covered through a variety of different foams and designs. The molded shoulder caps feature extensions for added wider upper body coverage, maximizing net coverage and protection. The wide shoulder floaters with top wrap around design are made to fit around the shoulder, providing coverage to all areas.
Arm Protection
The arms are protected with molded plastic arm caps, while the increased length wrist straps provide a more secure fit. The arm floaters on this protector have a deeper side profile that adds to the coverage area, with strategically placed HD foams throughout to provide protection and coverage to goalies. The side bicep extension also adds additional side arm coverage.
Elbow Caps
The elbow caps on the ION Select chest protector are designed to keep the elbow in place with little movement. The molded ergonomic fit elbows are constructed to shape around your elbow and provide protection from impacts. The HD foam was integrated to provide protection and durability to goalies, absorbing impacts and dispersing force away to reduce the chance of injury.
Spine Protection
The back area of this chest protector features high grade construction for enhanced performance and great overall protection. The back and spine are covered with high-density foam protection, ensuring that all areas of the upper torso are protected and secured while on the ice.

Goalie Chest Protector Sizing
Sizing a chest protector is important to ensure the goaltenders range of motion is uninhibited, while still offering complete coverage from impact. There are steps necessary to finding the right fit in your chest protector, and the first is to know your measurements. Here at The Hockey Shop, we like to use two measurements: torso length and arm span. Once you have these two measurements, match your measurements to our sizing charts.
Sizing your Chest Protector
After receiving your chest protector, you are going to want to check if the size fits the following criteria:
- 1. The arms end just before your wrist. This is important because you want to ensure that the wrist portion of the arms do not interfere with your blocker and catcher—this still provides adequate growing room for the blocker and trapper, which usually last you 1 to 2 years. Depending on the model, adjustable arms may be an offered feature, which is an added bonus for goaltenders that are still growing.
2. Your elbows fit securely in to the pocket of the elbow protection, and do not shift too far away from them. Keep in mind, arms usually have to be adjusted while putting on your chest & arm. Use the adjustable arm features where given to give you an optimal fit.
3. Make sure the shoulders of the chest & arm are sitting comfortably atop, and wrapped around your shoulders. This can be seen visually by looking at the collar of the chest & arm. You want the collar to sit slightly above your clavicle, but not too high that it interferes with the bottom of your goalie mask.
Each brand of chest & arms will have not only a different shape, but also a slightly different fit.
