The Vaughn ION leg pads are new from Vaughn as part of their 2026 goalie collection. The pads are equipped with many features that make it a reliable pad including an easy-flex lower scoop secretion of pad and inner core, a rebound-positive design and construction for active rebounds, and a smooth flat instep area for increased pad rotation.
External Material
Vaughn uses the JenPro material on the outer construction of these leg pads. This durable material provides the pads with a reliable and solid outer build, and it helps keep the leg pads in shape for longer. JenPro is a trusted material and is found on nearly all of Vaughn’s goalie equipment because of its reliability, appearance, and overall performance that it provides. These leg pads also include a Quick-Slide inner edge material that is designed to reduce friction on the ice for quick movements.
Internal Construction
The ION leg pads are designed with a stiff upper thigh rise, which provides a more reliable five-hole seal and prevents the pad from folding or twisting when pucks hit the upper area, as well as providing more predictable and consistent rebounds. The pre-shape profile on these pads helps close the five-hole in the butterfly position and create a more natural, snug fit along the leg. Additionally, Vaughn constructed these leg pads with a tapered outer roll. The tapered outer roll offers reduced pad interference, significant weight savings, and more predictable and angled rebounds.
Pad Break
These goalie pads are designed to have no break. The stiff, flat-faced core with zero breaks provides a rigid structure that maximizes butterfly coverage, powerful sliding, and predictable rebound control. The solid outer roll is designed to maximize coverage, provide better puck deflection, and maintain the structural integrity of the pad, especially when dropping into the butterfly position.
Knee Cradle
The knee cradle of the ION features a widened knee landing area for improved integration with the knee pads of all sizes. The outer knee wing is made of nylon and is laced in allowing it to be adjusted or removed entirely. The wide leg cradle also provides firm leg support to goalies while in the butterfly position.
Boot Angle & Toe Taper
The steep boot and 90 degree toe taper on these leg pads provide a tighter seal along the ice and prevent the pad from shifting or over-rotating. This offers goalies many important benefits like better ice seal, preventing pad lean and slip, and controlled rotation to make movements feel more natural.
Strapping
To keep all of the protection in place, Vaughn added a series of straps to ensure the security and padding of this leg pad. The ION pads feature a velcro inner calf strap with a velcro landing to properly secure the leg pad, while there is also an adjustable knee strap that can be fastened to a fit that is specific for each goalie.
Sizing & Colors
The Vaughn ION Intermediate Goalie Leg Pads come in sizes 29+2”, 30+2”, and 31+2”. Additionally, these leg pads are offered in Black, White, White/Black, White/Blue, and White/Red.

Goalie Leg Pads Sizing
Deciding your Goalie Pads size is crucial for having total control while moving in the crease. Sizing your pads properly is the difference between getting that perfect seal on your butterfly, and feeling clunky or unprotected in the net. Below we have compiled some information to better assist you in deciding which size is right for you.
Floor-To-Knee Measurement
Your Floor-To-Knee measurement will give you a good indication as to what "Pad Size" you will need. This measurement can be matched up with the provided sizing chart above.
How to Measure your Floor-To-Knee
- 1. In your bare feet, place the soft measuring tape at the inside of the bottom of your foot.
2. Slightly bend your knee.
3. Run the soft measuring tape up your shin, to the middle of your knee.
4. Match your Floor-To-Knee measurement with the provided sizing chart
What to look for when trying on your new pads.
Once you have your new leg pads, you’ll need to make sure they fit you properly. To do so, you’ll need to put the pads on with your skates. There a couple things to do to check size, once you have the pads on:
1. Stand straight and bring your feet together. This will show you the overall height of the pad, while on. Your pads should not be taller than your hips. Ideally you want the top of your pad at the half-way point of your thighs. A pad fitted for a young growing goaltender can be a little taller, so a little above the half-way point is normal.
2. Next you want to get in your stance, keep your hands in a ready position, and drop to your butterfly. Without moving your legs to correct your butterfly, bring your heels together. This is where you assess your knee position. For a proper fit, you want the middle of your knee to sit directly on the center of the knee stack. If you’re looking for growing room, you want the middle of your knee to land roughly 1.5” below the center of the knee stack (1” for JR).
Not getting a complete seal while in your butterfly?
If you're having trouble getting a full seal in your new pads, it may be the way you’re strapping them up. Make sure your boot strap and top straps (above knee) are loosened up a bit. The reason you want these straps loose is because they have a direct effect on the rotation of the pad. Having a loose boot strap makes it easy for your foot and ankle to rotate as the pad moves. Same goes for the top straps, as you don't want them pulling down too hard on the thigh rise.
