Intro/New Features

The TRUE Catalyst 7X4 Goalie Skate is designed for serious goaltenders looking to take their game to the next level with ultimate fit, comfort, and performance without compromising on durability. New for 2024, the Catalyst 7X4 Goalie Skate offers many of the same innovative technologies and elite performance benefits found within TRUE's flagship 9X4 model.

Skate Fit Profile

Given TRUE’s vast knowledge and experience in building custom skates, they looked at the lasts they built over the past 25 years to help compose a mold designed to fit most goalies.

Boot Construction/Stiffness/Level of Play

As previously mentioned, the 7X4 uses a NeuroFit+ one-piece carbon fiber molded boot featuring technologies such as TRUEShell and Fibershield technologies which seamlessly wrap into the toe box eliminating any weak spots in the high impact areas. The 7X4 skates are fairly stiff to start due to the combination of the one-piece shell and the tongue. In addition to the carbon fiber shell, the side panels are constructed with poured PU for extreme abrasion resistance.

Liner/Internal Padding

A liner seen in TRUE's custom skates and now in the 7X4, the Clarino Hydrofoam liner is currently the most durable liner available in their lineup. The Clarino liner excells at repelling moisture and with a multi-layered construction, the skate feels more responsive and locked to your foot.

Tongue

The tongue in the 7X4 skate is a lightweight pro goalie tongue with a molded t-guard. The pro goalie tongue offers the best in protection, comfort and fit.

Holders & Steel

Like the TF7, TRUE has used their goalie specific version of the Shift holder, called the Shift Attack holder. It features the same BenchChange tool-less blade release as seen on the player holder. The stock steel seen in the 7X4 is the Shift Attack steel, and optional offset 4mm Stainless and DLC black steel blades are available for goalies who want that thicker steel seen on traditional TRUE skates.

Graphics

The 7X4 features a refreshed look for 2024, with an exposed carbon heel and honeycomb webbing along the sidewall. The skate is more toned down from the TF7, with black and silver colouration and small hints of blue in the 7X4 logo and tongue, giving a sleek, professional look to the boot.

Light, comfortable, switching to cowlingless a game changer

I recently decided to go from a pair of Graf 1050s to a cowlingless skate. The Hockey Shop had a great deal on True tf7s so I jumped on the deal. Apparently, I placed my order sometime between the sale of the last pair of tf7s in my size and the online inventory update. They could not fulfill my order and sent an extremely polite email offering to substitute 7x4s AT THE SAME SALE PRICE AS THE TF7s! Customer service like that is so rare these days. Anyway…to the skates.

Baked at home (8 minutes at 190), put on, wrapped, and waited 10 minutes. Played twice today - first two sessions with the skates. I had a painful spot on my ankle…to the point where walking to the ice, I wondered if I’d last the full hour. 5 minutes in, pain free, like wearing an old pair of favourite sneakers. Second game, several hours later, comfortable right off the bat.

I find the lower angle/stance awesome. Lateral movement better/easier with both angle of attack and 3mm blade (likely a fresh sharpening too). I weighed these skates 9w and the were about 330 grams lighter (per skate) then my Grafs. May make a difference for elite goalies … I have plenty of other options for getting (much more than) 660 grams lighter.

Bottom line, unbelievable customer service from The Hockey Shop, great skates, super comfortable, and big difference (at least for me).

Hockey Goalie Skate Sizing Guide

    Things to consider:
  • Age
  • Measurement from longest point of foot (cm)

When sizing for the correct size of a skate, we always advise taking the measurements below from a sitting position and not standing upright. Additional weight on your foot/feet can skew your result and misrepresent your foot size. The reason for this is that as you put your full weight on your feet, the arch of your foot will collapse and cause your foot to appear wider or longer than it actually is.

As well, please be aware that skate sizes and shoes sizing do not match exactly. As a general guideline, skates size 1 ½ sizes smaller than shoes.

It is ideal for a player to have a tight, snug fit both in length and width as this will provide the best performance and durability. If a skate is too big you will feel your feet slide around and you will not get the full performance out of the skates and can also develop calcium deposits - Haglund’s Deformity or “Bauer Bumps” for lack of a better term although this issue doesn’t only occur with Bauer models.

An Ideal Fit:
Stand with your skates laced and your heel snug in the heel cup. Your toes should just barely feather the end of the toe box. Bend forward into a skating stance. Your toes should pull back slightly from the toe box. Once heat fit, your foot should slide back into the foams of the skate and the length you felt in your skating stance will more-or-less become you standing size.

To obtain the measurement above you will need a soft tape measure and a pen. Start by placing the tape measure flat along the ground in a straight line. Sitting in a chair, place your foot down with the longest point of your foot (usually big toe, or second toe) in line with the edge of the tape measure. Make sure you keep your weight off of your foot. Take a pen and mark the tape measure where the edge of your heel ends. Record this length in cm. This measurement will correspond with the sizing charts in each brand below, if you do not see your exact measurement, select the size with the next size increment above your measurement (i.e. you measure 24.9 cm, you would select 25.1 cm or Size 6).

Sizing Children for Growth Room:
If you are purchasing skates for your child, it is common and usually recommended to add some additional room in the skate to increase the last, we recommend no more than 1 full size. Feet stop growing around ages 15 – 15 ½, and from ages 14 - 15 ½ we would recommend adding only half (1/2) a size in length. Follow the same measurement instructions as above, once you obtain your true size move up ½ or 1 size.

***Sizing of skates is very preference based and these measurements will not guarantee a fit that is right for you. Please use these as general guidelines, for the most accurate fit we always recommend getting measured by a professional skate fitter at our store or your local pro shop.***
