Senior sizing, for a full-grown jaw
The Shock Doctor Pro is a strapped boil-and-bite mouthguard, the usual choice for hockey because the tether clips to the cage and keeps the guard with the player when it comes out. The build is a simple multilayer construction around an internal shock-absorbing frame. It comes in senior and junior sizing.
Boil and bite means you fit it yourself. Soften the guard in hot water, bite down, and shape it to your own teeth and jaw. That gives a far closer fit than a guard straight off the shelf, and the Pro expands by up to 20% during fitting, so it looks small before it is moulded. It also fits over braces, with a shorter time in the water. The material is latex free.
Fitting and sizing
Senior and junior are the two sizes, with junior cut for a smaller jaw and nothing in between the two. Follow the fitting instructions rather than guessing at it, and refit the guard if the first attempt comes out crooked, which the material allows. Shock Doctor builds the same guard in a strapless version if a player would rather go without a tether.

To fit: bring a saucepan with three to four inches of water to a rolling boil, take it off the heat and let it stand for 30 seconds. Attach the tether first, then put the guard in the water for 12 seconds, or 10 seconds if you wear braces. Lift it out with a slotted spoon or by the tether and lick your lips. Watching in a mirror, line the guard up with the centreline of your upper teeth and place it around all of them. Bite down firmly, push your tongue against the roof of your mouth, suck in strongly and press the guard tight against your gums with your fingers. Take it out, cool it in water for 30 seconds, then put it back in and test the fit. The guard expands by up to 20% when moulded correctly, so it will feel small at first. Start again from the beginning if the fit is not right.
