New for 2022 is the updated Axis 2 chest and arm protector from CCM. The Axis 2 chest protector employs many new and returning tech tailored toward optimal mobility and coverage for the butterfly goalie, including ADPTFlex, Vent-Tech, and D3O foam. The extra mobility over the elite-level protection looks to provide butterfly goalies with the ideal edge they need over their opponents.
External Material
The Axis 2 chest protector is equipped with an ADPTFlex belly design for additional coverage around that area. ADPTFlex can also be found in player protectives in the form of ADPTFit and works similarly on the goalie gear; the belly pad self-adjusts as needed to follow your movements on the ice and keep you covered all game. Also similar to the player side is the incorporation of Vent-Tech in strategic areas over the pads and along the liner. Finally, the molded square design of the bicep maximizes coverage over your arms.
Internal Foams
CCM used HD foam in the bicep, ribs, and rounded forearm. The foam setup in the ribs is multi-segmented and molded with an extended wrap for full coverage all game. They also included military-grade D3O foam in the sternum/clavicle area and a Vent-Tech core shield over the chest. D3O is known in CCM’s protectives for its amazing absorption capabilities and has even been used often in military equipment. On the Axis 2 chest protector, you can be sure you are getting the best protection possible.
Shoulder Caps
The shoulder caps use molded HD foam on the inside with a square contour to cushion impact and fit them comfortably in place. The shoulder wings are segmented and also have a square contour to cover much of the net.
Adjustable Arms
The Axis 2 chest protector uses velcro in the shoulders, allowing you to get your ideal fit quicker and easier. The use of velcro also helps keep the shoulders’ fit more secure. Adjustments have been added to the elbow protectors, which can be modified independently to fit your arms, no matter the shape or size.
Elbow Caps
The elbow protectors will keep you feeling secure and mobile in your gear, so you can be ready to move to stop and direct the puck in all directions more effectively.
Back Straps
The back uses velcro and has many straps for quick and easy fitting to your body shape. Vent-Tech is also present in the back for additional breathability.

Goalie Chest Protector Sizing
Sizing a Goaltenders Chest Protector is important to ensure the range of motion is not impeded, while still offering complete coverage from impact. There are steps necessary to finding the right fit in your Chest Protector, and the first is to know your measurements.
Finding The Right Size - Measuring Arm Span
To measure your arm span, hold your arms out and measure from wrist to wrist. Start from the bottom of one forearm (you’ll see a bone where your wrist is) and measure to the other. Avoid measuring from fingertip to fingertip, as hand size is not relative to arm length. You do not want the Chest Protectors arm lengths to be too long and interfere with the Catcher and Blocker.
Making Sure Your Chest Protector Fits Properly
Below are some good criteria to follow to make sure your Chest Protector fits properly.
- 1. The arms of the Chest Protector end just before your wrist. This is important because you want to ensure that the wrist portion of the arms do not interfere with your blocker and catching glove. Depending on the model, adjustable arms may be an offered feature, which is an added bonus for goaltenders that are still growing. If the arms are too long, or too short, check the arms of your Chest Protector to see if the length can be adjusted.
- 2. The elbow of the goaltender fits securely into the pocket of the elbow protection, and doesn't shift too far away from them. Keep in mind, arms usually have to be adjusted and positioned properly while putting on your chest protector.
- 3. Make sure the shoulders of the Chest Protector are sitting comfortably and wrapped around your shoulders. This can be seen visually by looking at the collar of the Chest Protector, looking to see the shoulders are sitting in the pocket of the shoulder caps. You also want to make sure that the collar of the Chest Protector doesn't sit below the clavicle, exposing the goaltenders collar bone.
