Intro & New Features

The next update from Brian’s for 2022 is the new Optik 3 collection. The Optik 3 leg pads will be an ideal option for the butterfly goalie, with a MAX core variation available at stock and FLY and FLX core variations in custom. Specs include an Opti-Slide sliding edge, a reduced outer roll, Bri-Core, and a Pro 2 Knee Pad System.

External Material

The Optik 3 still uses an Opti-Slide exterior material, which is well-known for its durability and sliding performance. Brian’s made some additional changes to the pad as well to further optimize performance and mobility. The outer roll size has been reduced to cut weight while increasing visibility when tracking the puck up close. The profile has also been made thinner and lighter for greater mobility.

Internal Construction

New to the Optik series and migrating over from the G-NETik series is Bri-core, which is a triaxle carbon-fibre composite reinforced thigh for greater rigidity in that area.

The new Optik pads come in three possible variations for cores: MAX, FLY, and FLX. MAX is available for stock.

MAX refers to a stiff core above the knee with a more flexible boot. This is a good middle ground between FLY and FLX.

FLY is similar to MAX, more tailored for the butterfly goalie.

FLX is a bit more flexible throughout and is better tailored for the hybrid goalie.

Pad Break

The Optik pads have variations that cater to butterfly goalies with the MAX and FLY cores, and goalies that may take a more hybrid style will benefit most from the FLX core. There is a single internal break with the MAX and FLY options, and a double internal break with the FLX option. MAX is available at stock.

Boot Angle & Toe Taper

Each variation uses a different toe taper:

MAX - 87”

FLY - 90”

FLX - 80”

The Optik 3 is also equipped with an internal boot lift to help with pad rotation. At stock, the boot is a bit softer, with more variations available in custom.

Knee Cradle

The Optik 3 continues to use the Pro 2 Knee Pad System from the G-NETik series, which is compatible with Pro 2 knee pads. Depending on your personal preferences, you can attach the knee pad to the pad or leave it independent. The knee cradle is padded and made of mesh for good protection and aeration.

Strapping

The pads include multiple strap systems to keep the gear nice and snug while allowing for optimal rotation and responsiveness. Optik returns to the original Smart Strap system over the calf, which offers reliable responsiveness and connection with the gear. Over the Smart Strap system is an Outer to Inner strapping system that has been redesigned to stretch from the outer calf wrap toward the inner wrap. With the elastic slide plate connection, there is less pull, ensuring greater stability and control.

There is an additional optional upper calf strap attached to the pads to offer a solid anchor point that doesn’t restrict movement.

Colors, Sizes & Customization

The Optik 3 Senior leg pads are available in 31+1 to 38+1 sizes at stock, in the following colourways: Black/White, Black/White/Silver, and Wite/Red/Black. Brian’s offers a customization option with the Optik 3 pads, which allows you to decide your own colours, angles, sizes, etc. in the pads.

Goalie Leg Pads Sizing

Deciding your Goalie Pads size is crucial for having total control while moving in the crease. Sizing your pads properly is the difference between getting that perfect seal on your butterfly, and feeling clunky or unprotected in the net. Below we have compiled some information to better assist you in deciding which size is right for you.

Ankle-To-Knee Measurement

Your Ankle-To-Knee measurement will give you a good indication as to what "Pad Size" you will need. This measurement can be matched up with the provided sizing chart above.

How to Measure Your Ankle-To-Knee

    1. In your bare feet, place the soft measuring tape at the inside of the inside of your ankle.
    2. Slightly bend your knee.
    3. Run the soft measuring tape up your shin, to the middle of your knee.
    4. Match your Ankle-To-Knee measurement with the provided sizing chart

What to look for when trying on your new pads:

Once you have your new leg pads, you’ll need to make sure they fit you properly. To do so, you’ll need to put the pads on with your skates. There a couple things to do to check size, once you have the pads on:
1. Stand straight and bring your feet together. This will show you the overall height of the pad, while on. Your pads should not be taller than your hips. Ideally you want the top of your pad at the half-way point of your thighs. A pad fitted for a young growing goaltender can be a little taller, so a little above the half-way point is normal.
2. Next you want to get in your stance, keep your hands in a ready position, and drop to your butterfly. Without moving your legs to correct your butterfly, bring your heels together. This is where you assess your knee position. For a proper fit, you want the middle of your knee to sit directly on the center of the knee stack. If you’re looking for growing room, you want the middle of your knee to land roughly 1.5” below the center of the knee stack (1” for JR).

Not getting a complete seal while in your butterfly?

If you're having trouble getting a full seal in your new pads, it may be the way you’re strapping them up. Make sure your boot strap and top straps (above knee) are loosened up a bit. The reason you want these straps loose is because they have a direct effect on the rotation of the pad. Having a loose boot strap makes it easy for your foot and ankle to rotate as the pad moves. Same goes for the top straps, as you don't want them pulling down too hard on the thigh rise.

I had a great experience at The Hockey Shop Source for Sports and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for hockey equipment. I stopped in to pick up an affordable pair of skates for public skating, and the staff made the entire process easy and stress-free. They took the time to answer my questions, helped me find a pair that fit both my needs and my budget, and never made me feel pressured to spend more than I wanted. It’s refreshing to shop somewhere that focuses on finding the right product instead of simply making the biggest sale. After I chose my skates, the staff heat-molded them for me to improve the fit. They explained the process, made sure everything fit comfortably, and gave me tips on breaking them in properly. That extra level of service made a noticeable difference and showed they genuinely care about helping customers leave with equipment that fits correctly. The store itself is clean, organized, and has a huge selection of gear for players of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re buying your first pair of skates or upgrading high-end equipment, there’s plenty to choose from. Overall, the friendly staff, knowledgeable service, and professional skate fitting made this an excellent shopping experience. I’ll definitely be returning for future hockey gear and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Hockey Shop Source for Sports to anyone looking for quality equipment and outstanding customer service. 🏒🥅

Came up from Seattle since the hockey shops here have a pretty terrible selection of goalie gear, and it was amazing. The staff were super helpful and knowledgeable and the selection of gear was fantastic.

As far as retail gear goes, Hockey Shop can’t be beat. Great selection in stock and knowledgeable staff, who are particularly helpful with skate fittings. Team Sales is where Hockey Shop really shines. I’ve dealt with Emma in that section for custom gear with multiple teams. She responds fast, gets things done even faster and every order is perfect, whether it’s for one jersey or swag for an entire team. Call Team Sales and ask for Emma if you needs things done right. Highly recommended!

Place is great. Drove up from Washington for better selection and was blown away. Was looking for new skates and Trevor was incredibly helpful. Spent almost two hours rolling through all the different pros and cons, answering my dumb questions along the way. Will absolutely be back whenever I need gear.

The customer service here was simply amazing! I ordered rollerblades for my son’s birthday as a last-minute gift and accidentally ordered the wrong size. I called and spoke with Mitchell, who was absolutely wonderful to deal with. He was able to change my order while I was on the phone, helped me arrange express shipping, and got them shipped out right away. Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed they arrive in time, but the level of service I received was above and beyond what I expected. If you’re in Langley, I highly recommend shopping here. And if you’re ordering online, I 1000% recommend them. The customer service was exceptional, and Mitchell went out of his way to make sure everything was taken care of. Thank you for making a stressful last-minute birthday purchase so much easier! 🎉🎂

I brought in a friend who was looking to get started playing men's league. Brandon gave us the V.I.P. treatment and patiently helped us with absolutely everything my friend needed. I went to the Hockey Shop to order a custom goalie set and I can't say enough about my experience with Androo. I had a very particular idea about what I wanted and Androo took the time to go over every option on each piece of equipment while offering his own experiences and opinions, which was a huge help. We ended up exchanging three dozen emails over two months nailing down every little last detail. Every question was promptly answered and if he didn't know, he contacted the company directly to find out. Androo was super chill yet extremely professional and patient. He shared the same enthusiasm about goalie gear so it felt like I was talking to a buddy. I picked up my set today and it came out perfect! Thanks again, Androo!

Clearly this place has an amazing reputation already, so this review won’t make a dent. But I must say, Evan, the e-commerce team lead is great at his job and really helped me out with buying a set of goalie pads. Thanks Evan!

April 2026

I came in on two consecutive weekends, and I can confidently say that The Hockey Shop offers some of the best customer service I’ve ever experienced at a retail store. I was looking for a full set of gear, and the staff member assisting me was patient, knowledgeable, and most importantly not pushy. A lot of stores tend to upsell or suggest pricier gear that might not be necessary, but I never felt that pressure here. It felt like they were more interested in getting me into the right gear rather than the most expensive gear. On my second visit, Brennan in the skate section helped me out and honestly, you guys need to give him a raise! His customer service was top-notch. He was incredibly knowledgeable and made the process feel really personal by taking my foot shape and fit preferences into account. He even tossed in some extra laces on the house. Overall, THS is easily one of the best hockey shops in the Lower Mainland when it comes to selection and customer service. The only feedback I have is about the weekday hours—it can be tough to grab last-minute gear before a late evening game. Staying open until 6:30 or 7:00 PM on weekdays would be a huge help, though I totally understand the logistical challenges that might come with that.
