Intro & New Features

For the 2025 season, Bauer has released the Vapor Fly40 Senior Hockey Skate as their performance skate option. The Fly40 is the next upgrade from the previous X4 and offers a reliable skate for players.

Skate Fit Profile

The Vapor Fly40 skates come in Bauer’s Fits 1, 2, and 3, which is a concept that debuted in 2020. This was a great innovation, considering how the three lines, Vapor, Supreme, and Nexus, all historically had their own fits, despite performing differently. Now, those with narrower feet for example can enjoy the powerful stride enhancements that come with the Supreme line. Below is how the Bauer Fit System compares to previous years’ Bauer Skates:

  • Fit 1 = Low Volume, Narrow width (closest aligned to the Vapor fit profile)
  • Fit 2 = Medium Volume, Medium Width (closest aligned to the Supreme fit profile)
  • Fit 3 = High Volume, Wide Width (closest aligned to the Nexus fit profile)

Boot Construction & Stiffness Profile

Vapor line skates have their flex point in the lower portion of the skate, compared to the Supreme line, which flexes in the upper portion of the skate. A lower flex point is achieved in the Vapor line by maintaining a stiffer upper point and a softer, more reactive lower point. Paired with the 3D Lasted Curv Composite, the Flypro skate offers performance in every stride.

Liner & Internal Padding

Bauer uses a sublimated liner with comfort edge in the Fly40 skates. This design allows players feet to stay dry in the skate, keeping the skates lighter, and the comfort edge provides an additional layer of comfort towards the boot cut, avoiding any potential for irritation while wearing these skates.

Lacing System

The FlyPro skate utilizes a traditional lacing system similar to the previous generation of Vapor skates. Bauer uses integrated injected facing, which was an innovative addition first found in the 3X Pro skate that enhances lateral stability, ensuring a secure lock between the foot and the skate. This tech is similar to the HyperFlex facing found in the Hyperlite2 but still takes a more classic approach.

Tongue

A 40oz pro stock felt tongue comes stock in the Fly40 which provides great protection against lace bite and impact to ensure comfort and support during intense gameplay. The pro stock design ensures a professional-level fit, feel, and responsiveness, giving you the ability to play your best on the ice.

Steel/Runner/Profile/Blade Holder

Fly-X steel comes stock with the Fly40 skate. This steel features a high grade core with a titanium finish which enhances edge retention. The Fly-X steel has been paired to the Powerfly holder, which has been designed to adapt and respond to every skating move by focusing on three areas: the front post, the back post, and the hyperbolic bridge. The stiff front post increases energy transfer in every stride, while the flexible back post delivers faster side-to-side motions and aids in quicker pivots and transitions. The hyperbolic bridge optimizes balance and power to help make you unstoppable on the ice.

Toe Cap

The Fly40 skate utilizes the asymmetrical toe cap, a concept that has been observed in previous high-end Bauer skates. This cap contributes to a better overall fit by utilizing any unused space inside the boot.

Insoles

Bauer uses the Form Fit insole in this skate, which is made of a contoured foam material that molds to the shape of the player's foot over time. This helps provide a personalized fit and improves overall comfort by reducing pressure points and enhancing stability.

Graphics

The Flypro skate is primarily black, with a few new features for this year's model. Bauer added a Fly40 logo on the side of the skate, surrounded with White and Silver accents. There are also hints of Red to enhance the look of the skate.

Hockey Player Skate Sizing Guide

When sizing for the correct size of a skate, we always advise taking the measurements below from a sitting position and not standing upright. Additional weight on your foot/feet can skew your result and misrepresent your foot size. The reason for this is that as you put your full weight on your feet, the arch of your foot will collapse and cause your foot to appear wider or longer than it actually is.

As well, please be aware that skate sizes and shoes sizing do not match exactly. As a general guideline, skates size 1 ½ sizes smaller than shoes.

It is ideal for a player to have a tight, snug fit both in length and width as this will provide the best performance and durability. If a skate is too big you will feel your feet slide around and you will not get the full performance out of the skates and can also develop calcium deposits - Haglund’s Deformity or “Bauer Bumps” for lack of a better term although this issue doesn’t only occur with Bauer models.

An Ideal Fit: Stand with your skates laced and your heel snug in the heel cup. Your toes should just barely feather the end of the toe box. Bend forward into a skating stance. Your toes should pull back slightly from the toe box. Once heat fit, your foot should slide back into the foams of the skate and the length you felt in your skating stance will more-or-less become you standing size.

To obtain the measurement above you will need a soft tape measure and a pen. Start by placing the tape measure flat along the ground in a straight line. Sitting in a chair, place your foot down with the longest point of your foot (usually big toe, or second toe) in line with the edge of the tape measure. Make sure you keep your weight off of your foot. Take a pen and mark the tape measure where the edge of your heel ends. Record this length in cm. This measurement will correspond with the sizing charts in each brand below, if you do not see your exact measurement, select the size with the next size increment above your measurement (i.e. you measure 24.9 cm, you would select 25.1 cm or Size 6).

Sizing Children for Growth Room: If you are purchasing skates for your child, it is common and usually recommended to add some additional room in the skate to increase the last, we recommend no more than 1 full size. Feet stop growing around ages 15 – 15 ½, and from ages 14 - 15 ½ we would recommend adding only half (1/2) a size in length. Follow the same measurement instructions as above, once you obtain your true size move up ½ or 1 size.

***Sizing of skates is very preference based and these measurements will not guarantee a fit that is right for you. Please use these as general guidelines, for the most accurate fit we always recommend getting measured by a professional skate fitter at our store or your local pro shop.***
