Warrior Alpha One Helmet Review
Written By: Landon Foley |10/19/18
Released at the end of the summer, the Alpha One is Warrior’s newest addition to the hockey helmet industry. Other than providing a similar fit, the Alpha One is quite different from its predecessors, the Covert and Krown lines, with new technologies and a redesigned look. Let’s dive right in and see what the Alpha One has to offer.
True One Shell
Inspired by the design of helmets in other high-impact sports (such as football), the True One Shell is new to Warrior’s helmet line and offers a high-density, one-piece plastic shell. This differs from Warrior’s past helmets, as well as other helmets currently on the market, which are composed of multiple pieces.
The True One Shell brings a superior strong and stiff barrier of advanced protection that is lightweight, with the geometry of the shell absorbing more shock while providing better impact diffusion. I personally love the new look that this shell provides, as the helmet has a sleek profile that is aesthetically pleasing.
OmniShock Protection System and Viconic Inserts
Integrated by design, the OmniShock Protection System is composed of multiple elements that provide advanced levels of protection. The True One shell and EPP foam serve as the core of head safety, providing a lightweight barrier that protects against catastrophic injury.
The main impact zones of the head (the frontal lobe, the temples and the occipital) have been focused in on and enhanced with Viconic inserts, lightweight plates that diffuse energy. Viconic absorbs many types of impacts, both twisting and linear.
The Impax soft touch foam shield works with the Viconic plates to protect against small and large impacts. Combined, these protective features create the OmniShock Protection System, Warrior’s newest design in helmet protection.
AdaptFit 360 By Boa
Warrior has completely revamped their fitting mechanisms with the Alpha One. Out is the front-to-back adjustment with the side clips, and in is the Adaptfit 360 system with a Boa dial at the back of the helmet. The Boa dial allows you to make micro adjustments in terms of the internal tightness of the helmet, doing an incredible job of providing a full 360-degree wrap around the head.
This is a big improvement over the side clip adjustments that the Covert line offered. As well, not only does the Adaptfit 360 system allow you to get a snug, comfortable fit, it increases the protection level of the helmet by separating the outer shell from the inner lining of the helmet, improving shock absorption.
Flow Comfort Polygiene Liner and Venting
There is nothing worse than wearing a helmet that irritates you, especially when you have to wear it for over an hour at a time, as players usually do. Fortunately, Warrior has us covered, having given the Alpha One removable flow liner pads that are treated with Polygiene.
Seen in many hockey gloves, Polygiene is a technology that prevents odour-causing bacteria from growing, keeping your helmet from getting that nasty sweat smell. The liner pads absorb sweat and dry quickly, while the many air vents throughout the helmet help prevent you from overheating.
Color Customization
Warrior has introduced a neat idea with the Alpha One in providing side decals of multiple colours with the purchase of the helmet. These decals can be easily applied to the sides of the helmet, giving you a leg up in style over your teammates in wearing your team colours. Simply peel off the paper backing, line up the Warrior logo on the side of the helmet, apply pressure to the decals, and peel off the clear plastic applicator.
Alpha One Pro
For those who aren’t willing to go top of the line on a helmet, Warrior has also released the Alpha One Pro. Coming in at $149.99, the Alpha One Pro provides many similar features as the top-end Alpha One, including the True One Shell and a Boa dial, but at a price point that is a lot more wallet-friendly.
Final Thoughts
Warrior has really taken a step forward in their helmet design with the introduction of the Alpha One. With improvements in protection and fit over its predecessors, the Alpha One is right in the mix with the other higher end helmets on the market.
