Bauer Supreme 2S Pro Goalie Skates Review

In 2016, Bauer blew the goalie world away with their “cowling-less” goalie skate design, with the Supreme 1S series. In 2018, Bauer brings us the second generation, Supreme 2S Pro goalie skate. Being the most important piece of hockey equipment, here’s an in-depth look at the features of the new Bauer Supreme 2S goalie skates.

Lower

Holder & Runner

Much like the previous Supreme 1S and the Vapor 1X goalie skates, the Supreme 2S Pro comes with the Vertexx Edge holder. What’s different with the 2S pro, however, is the new LS5G Vertexx Carbon runner. LS5G is Bauer’s newest steel. It is carbon-coated to prevent corrosion and increase sharpening life time. To top it off, the LS5G steel is 4mm taller than the LS3G steel.

The Vertexx Edge holder is an innovative piece, all on its own. The holder alone increases the skate height by 5mm – 9mm with the LS5G steel. The increased height gives then increases the goalie’s attack angle by 10% from the original Vertexx cowling and 38% from other traditional cowlings.

Vertexx Edge cowlings feature Bauer’s popular trigger release system, making it easy to switch out pairs of steel between periods, or even whistles.

Outsole

Since there is no actual cowling protecting the lower portion of the boot, the Supreme 2S goal skates feature a vented composite outsole. While keeping the sole of the skate solid and protective, it also doubles as a steady platform to increase the potential energy transfer in each stride. Though you don’t literally feel these transfers, you should notice more consistency when skating.

Upper

Quarter Package

The most important part of the entire 2S Pro goal skate is the Curv composite quarter package. The Curv composite is an ultra-lightweight, 3D thermo-formable material that molds to the anatomy of the goalie’s foot, providing a custom fit. Given the stiff nature of Curv composite, the result is a custom fit that doesn’t sacrifice power during the energy transfer in a stride.

The quarter package also features a polyurethane coating atop the Curv composite to protect the overall integrity of the skate, as well as a high-gloss finish for a great look.

Tongue

The 2S Pro skate features a Bauer’s new Recoil Tongue. The Recoil Tongue is an asymmetrical tongue that features a Hytrel insert to provide a rebound-like effect. The rebound-like effect from the tongue offers optimal energy transfer when pushing side-to-side in the crease. It also helps prevent lace-bite!

AnaformFit

Bauer’s asymmetric fit continues with the AnaformFit design. AnaformFit, for those who don’t know, is a shorter cut on the lateral side of the boot than the medial side of the boot. The shorter cut on the lateral side allows the goalie to get into a deeper stance without putting stress on their ankles. The taller medial side stabilizes and maintains protection.

Liner

Inside, Bauer uses Lock-Fit Pro to line the internals of the skate. Lock-Fit Pro is a heel lock ankle pad, with eyelet comfort pads. While the fabric is soft and comfortable, the purpose of Lock-Fit is to keep your heel in place.

Lock-Fit also includes the insole, where there is grip along the edge of the entire insole. This locks in your entire foot, providing great consistency throughout the skate.

Final Thoughts

The Supreme 1S goalie skate was an absolute homerun for Bauer, and I feel like the 2S Pro will be much the same. There are a couple things I like about this skate. First, I’m a big fan of the new LS5G steel, for a couple reasons: the carbon-coating is a good feature to give you some comfort with this steel, since it protects the integrity of the steel; more importantly, the increased height is a great feature to have since customers won’t need to buy secondary steel.

Together, I also like the tongue and liner. Even without a heat mold, these are very comfortable skates. Most important, the look of the skate is my absolute favourite part. The polyurethane coating, as I mentioned earlier, adds a high-gloss finish to the skate and it looks so good. All the small details and tone-on-tone designs pop with the gloss, and the gold accents make the Supreme 2S Pro goalie skates the most aesthetically pleasing, to me.
