Release Date: Spring 2019
By: Jono Holloway
The most revolutionary goalie skates CCM has ever produced are making their way to the market in 2019. The main features consist of a one-piece boot as well as a new quick release holder and a dramatic decrease in weight, making these the lightest goal skates ever produced by CCM. Available in the pro model FT2 as well custom options and the price point options FT480 and the FT460, we will dive into the all new pro model.
One-piece Boot Construction
The boot on the CCM FT2 goal skate is now a one-piece boot, eliminating the need for the white cowling or the half-cowling used by CCM on the Tacks, Ribcore and AS1 goal skates. This not only provides a much sleeker look, but also allows for a lighter skate all around. In this boot, there is no outsole, stitching or glue in any high energy transfer zones, enabling a more direct and powerful push as well as a better fitting skate.
The FT2 is very light and also very rigid, using NHL-caliber lightweight composite material to keep the boot stiff for maximum transfer energy and more consistent power.
Asymmetric Flex Stance Contour
CCM has changed up the shape of the boot to allow you to drop and recover faster. This flex stance contour design is a lower cut boot collar allowing goalies to flex deeper into their stance without any ankle issues. I found this feature very useful, allowing me to get lower on breakaways and take away the lower portion of the net without sacrificing any mobility.
The FT2 skates are equipped with a TRITECH flex zone as well as molded lace bite protection. This tongue allows the user the necessary flex to allow goalies to bend forward and get low without much restriction. The tongue also has molded lace-bite protection similar to what has been seen on previous CCM skates.
Liner & Footbed
The CCM FT2 goalie skates were very comfortable to use, with nice cushioning around the ankles allowing comfort while locking in your ankle for performance. CCM uses their TOTALDRI moisture-wicking technology to keep feet dry and the skate itself light. On the bottom, they have inserted their CCM ORTHOLITE insole that promotes energy transfer and breathability while still providing comfort to the user.
Speedblade XSG Holder
The all-new XSG holder has a new feature awaited by CCM fans for years, a quick release blade. This dial-like release mechanism is easy to use, and a very convenient feature. All the individual parts of the holder are replaceable, meaning if a piece of your holder breaks, you don’t have to buy a completely new holder. This holder also has added height compared to CCM’s previous skates allowing goalies to get lower and have a better attack angle in their stance.
Speed Blade XSG1 Black
CCM gives the FT2 goal skates one final improvement by pairing the skates with the new XSG1 Black blades. Not only are these blades now 3mm, but CCM has also added height to the blade, providing longer overall life and a greater attack angle. These runners are coated with an oxide treatment to promote longer life between sharpening and added resistance to corrosion.
Custom 3D Scan
CCM will be offering two custom options, 3D-Fit and Total Custom Plus. The 3D-Fit being a custom mold that you can receive in 10 days, much faster than the current custom skate offerings. This custom skate offers a 360-degree scan of your foot allowing no gaps between your foot and the skate walls. At a higher price point, ideally for those with unique requirements, CCM is offering their Total Custom Plus option similar to others on the market in a four-week time-frame. This option will include all the options from the Total Custom program as well as special boot volume options, extra liner and extra padding.
When you’re standing in the crease for a full game, it’s essential you have comfortable skates and CCM nails it with the FT2 goal skates. With an all-new cowlingless skate, a thinner blade and a new holder, CCM has redesigned their goalie skates to compete with the rest of the market. The new quick release holder will allow goalies the ability to have an extra set of steel blades on hand and a quick fix if it breaks. The dial function is a new idea and provides the ability to fix the holder rather than having to purchase an entire new holder. I had a blast trying these skates out, and I’m more than excited to see the custom skate options being brought to the goalie world. With all the new features and available custom options, I am looking forward to rocking a pair next season.
