Intro & New Features
The Ventus line from Vaughn continues its legacy of a modern pad feel with the SLR 2 Pro Carbon senior goalie leg pads. Taking a similar base from the original SLR and adding new features like bungee toe ties as well as updated strapping, and the Quickslide surface for increased sliding has turned the SLR 2 into the most popular Vaughn pad at the NHL level.
External Material
For the Ventus SLR 2 leg pads Vaughn has added their Quickslide technology to the sliding surface of the pad which is a large improvement over the traditional synthetic leather that was previously used on the surface. With less friction on the ice, slides require less effort to achieve the same reach.
Internal Construction
The SLR2 uses a full Pro Core internal foams, with Vaughn’s now tried and tested Carbon Enhanced Performance running from top to toe for improved spring and pad longevity. Giving a harder rebound than the Velocity line, the Ventus will feel more at home with goalies that are used to a modern pad and rebound.
Pad Break
Vaughn’s SLR 2 Pro Carbon is a no-break pad that features a pre-curved design to help close the fivehole and create a wide butterfly on the ice. The Pro Core with Carbon Enhanced Performance allows the pad to be on the softer side of a hard pad and still retain a hard rebound while maintaining its shape by being springy.
Boot Angle
The boot of the SLR 2 Pro Carb leg pad is not very familiar to Vaughn goalies that are used to a Velocity pad. With a more upright positioning at about a 60* angle the SLR 2 goalie pads sit higher on the foot and allow for better puck direction to the corners in the butterfly, as well as a taller appearance.
Knee Cradle
The Ventus line for this year offers a wide knee cradle that allows for solid landing surface and a free rotating pad to allow for an easy transition into the butterfly. The knee cradle also features a suede surface to ensure that the goaltenders knee doesn’t slip off onto the ice.
Knee & Thigh Protection
The SLR2 line doesn’t offer built in knee protection in a thigh flap, or included knee pad. The large thigh rise does allow for good coverage of the knee, however separate knee protection is recommended.
Strapping
The strapping that the Ventus line has offered is slightly updated from the original SLR. The defining feature of the Ventus strapping is the magnetic Reactive Rotation Strap that is just below the knee. This straps allows for a familiar tight Vaughn feel but allows for excellent rotation for a quick butterfly without over tightening the rest of the pad. The SLR 2 Pro Carbon also features a new bungee toe strap that replaces traditional lacing. The bungee allows for very quick dressing/undressing as well as allowing for more flexibility while in the butterfly and quick transitions out.
Toe Taper
Keeping with the modern goal pad style, the Ventus SLR 2 offers a 90* toe taper to allow for the most effective seal to the ice when in the butterfly, as well as the most stability while down on the ice.

A large spectrum of colours and sizes are available custom with Vaughn. Our store stock will feature 33+2, 34+2, 35+2 and 36+2 available in White, White/Black, White/Black/Silver and White/Red.

Deciding your Goalie Pads size is crucial for having total control while moving in the crease. Sizing your pads properly is the difference between getting that perfect seal on your butterfly, and feeling clunky or unprotected in the net. Below we have compiled some information to better assist you in deciding which size is right for you.
Floor-To-Knee Measurement
Your Floor-To-Knee measurement will give you a good indication as to what "Pad Size" you will need. This measurement can be matched up with the provided sizing chart above.
How to Measure your Floor-To-Knee
What to look for when trying on your new pads.
Once you have your new leg pads, you’ll need to make sure they fit you properly. To do so, you’ll need to put the pads on with your skates. There a couple things to do to check size, once you have the pads on:
1. Stand straight and bring your feet together. This will show you the overall height of the pad, while on. Your pads should not be taller than your hips. Ideally you want the top of your pad at the half-way point of your thighs. A pad fitted for a young growing goaltender can be a little taller, so a little above the half-way point is normal.
2. Next you want to get in your stance, keep your hands in a ready position, and drop to your butterfly. Without moving your legs to correct your butterfly, bring your heels together. This is where you assess your knee position. For a proper fit, you want the middle of your knee to sit directly on the center of the knee stack. If you’re looking for growing room, you want the middle of your knee to land roughly 1.5” below the center of the knee stack (1” for JR).
Not getting a complete seal while in your butterfly?
If you're having trouble getting a full seal in your new pads, it may be the way you’re strapping them up. Make sure your boot strap and top straps (above knee) are loosened up a bit. The reason you want these straps loose is because they have a direct effect on the rotation of the pad. Having a loose boot strap makes it easy for your foot and ankle to rotate as the pad moves. Same goes for the top straps, as you don't want them pulling down too hard on the thigh rise.
