CCM enters the scene in 2022 with some major upgrades to their stiff Axis line. Tailored specifically for the young high-performance goaltender, the Axis 2.5 leg pads feature a Dynamic Response System, LiteCore Technology, Quick Motion Strap System 2, and CCM’s classic Speed Skin over the top.
External Material
Speed Skin material returns on the Axis 2.5, having been seen before on the previous Axis gear and originally debuting on the Premier 2. This exterior material offers superior slide by reducing friction between the pads and the ice. The Axis 2.5 has additionally been fine-tuned in its sliding capabilities with the new Dynamic Response System, which includes a one-piece landing zone to enhance comfort, speed, and seal along the ice when striding in butterfly.
Internal Construction
The Axis 2.5 leg pads use returning LiteCore technology in the core to keep the pads light and able to bank off powerful rebounds. It works together with the stiff profile to offer great stability as well while you play. The enhancements operate together to give you an overall better feel in butterfly, as well as to augment efficiency in making those big saves on the ice. The raised flat inside edge design in the pad stabilizer further enhances seal and stability when in movement.
Pad Break
The pads are precurved with one internal break and no external break. This break works in tangent with the stiff flex profile, which is ideal for butterfly goalies.
Boot Angle & Toe Taper
The Axis 2.5 is furnished with a 90° boot angle and toe taper to offer the most seal and support along the ice. The shallow boot channel provides a closer fit, as well as additional control and reinforcement on the stride.
Knee Cradle
The pads use a recessed knee cradle to maximize mobility and enhance rotation. The knee cradle enhancements are part of the new hyper-absorbent knee stack construction, which greatly amp up the pads’ durability and seal when sliding across the ice. The knee cradle is open with a removable cradle wrap.
Strapping
The Axis 2.5 leg pads have a shallow, loose-fit leg channel coupled with their Quick Motion Strap System 2 to offer a comfortable and mobile fit, in addition to keeping you securely strapped in. The Quick Motion Strap System 2 on these pads is optimized specifically for the butterfly goaltender, so they can easily move and rotate their pads cohesively and in quick response to the play. The toe bridge has been outfitted with offset bungee toe ties for even better mobility and overall leg support.

Deciding your Goalie Pads size is crucial for having total control while moving in the crease. Sizing your pads properly is the difference between getting that perfect seal on your butterfly, and feeling clunky or unprotected in the net. Below we have compiled some information to better assist you in deciding which size is right for you.
Floor-To-Knee Measurement
Your Floor-To-Knee measurement will give you a good indication as to what "Pad Size" you will need. This measurement can be matched up with the provided sizing chart above.
How to Measure your Floor-To-Knee
What to look for when trying on your new pads.
Once you have your new leg pads, you’ll need to make sure they fit you properly. To do so, you’ll need to put the pads on with your skates. There a couple things to do to check size, once you have the pads on:
1. Stand straight and bring your feet together. This will show you the overall height of the pad, while on. Your pads should not be taller than your hips. Ideally you want the top of your pad at the half-way point of your thighs. A pad fitted for a young growing goaltender can be a little taller, so a little above the half-way point is normal.
2. Next you want to get in your stance, keep your hands in a ready position, and drop to your butterfly. Without moving your legs to correct your butterfly, bring your heels together. This is where you assess your knee position. For a proper fit, you want the middle of your knee to sit directly on the center of the knee stack. If you’re looking for growing room, you want the middle of your knee to land roughly 1.5” below the center of the knee stack (1” for JR).
Not getting a complete seal while in your butterfly?
If you're having trouble getting a full seal in your new pads, it may be the way you’re strapping them up. Make sure your boot strap and top straps (above knee) are loosened up a bit. The reason you want these straps loose is because they have a direct effect on the rotation of the pad. Having a loose boot strap makes it easy for your foot and ankle to rotate as the pad moves. Same goes for the top straps, as you don't want them pulling down too hard on the thigh rise.
