Brian's NetZero Goal Pads

Customization of your gear has always been desired by every goalie, but it seems nowadays it’s all any goalie wants! One problem: not everybody wants to pay the price. This custom epidemic was caused by events in 2008…when the NHL season started, and Marc-Andre Fleury had all white pads. His banana pads were gone, and they weren’t coming back. And just like that, it seemed like there wasn’t a starting goalie in the NHL with any colour in their pads. This turned in to a trend that is still very mainstream, and all white is still the most requested colourway by customers. First, we saw pink duct tape getting slapped on in any way, shape, or form for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Then, goalies started using all different designs of duct tape to match their team colours. Entrepreneurial minds caught on and today we have products like Pad Skinz, where actual Jenpro can be applied to any graphic on a leg pad, blocker or trapper.

The NetZero Leg Pads

The Brian’s NetZero leg pad offers an optimal performance for any goaltender. Taking inspiration mainly from the G-NETik series, it also takes concepts from SubZero. When we first got our hands on these pads, what we first noticed was the weight. A 34” NetZero pad weighs in just over 5 lbs., making its weight very similar to that of the Sub Zero Pro II. Brian’s compliments the light weight of the pad with a soft structure. Using a combination of both HD and LD foams, and a double internal and external break makes the pad is very flexible, and in turn, extremely mobile for any goalie.

Considering how soft this pad is, one would assume that this type of pad would have knee rolls. Well, it doesn’t and it’s a very good reason. Over time, a soft, light weight pad can be become vulnerable to a lot torsion, but using a HD foam insert and a flat face design, the pad can keep a solid seal on the ice and give off predictable rebounds.

The back of the pad has a design we’ve seen before from Brian’s, as it is the same as the original G-NETik Pro. This leg channel features the increasingly popular Smart Strap system Brian’s first dawned on the original Sub Zero. Taking Velcro strapping to another level, Brian’s uses the Smart Strap toe tie and boot strap—this is their first non-pro pad to have this feature. The best part about this style of strapping is the amount of weight lost, compared to traditional leather straps. Another small feature that decreases the weight, and increases the performance, is the all nylon leg channel. Nylon is a durable, yet slick material, which is ideal for the pad’s rotation around your leg.

The NetZero Blocker and Trapper

The NetZero blocker and trapper are inspired directly from the G-NETik Pro series.

The blocker features a bindingless face, which not only is a clean look, but slightly increases the blocking surface of the blocker (binding is accounted for when measuring the perimeter of a blocker face). Protection is no question with the NetZero blocker, thanks to an HD foam construction in the face and sidewall. The sidewall is also buffered with a cushion between the thumb and sidewall, which is also removable for preference. Don’t fret when a puck rides up the paddle of your stick, either; the NetZero blocker features wrap around HD foam forefinger protection, to protect the ends of your fingertips.

Sliding your stick down for a poke check, or even just to play the puck, can wear down the side binding to your blocker. For this reason, our NetZero blockers come with an upgrade first seen on G-NETik 2: Primo binding. Primo is Brian’s new high-wear Jenpro, which resists tears from friction. All in all, this helps any user out by keeping up the gear’s shape.

The trapper is very similar to that of the last two G-NETik series, as it uses the same 35 degree break angle. This break angle closes the trapper toward the fingers, creating “longer” looking trapper; this characteristic is similar to any Vaughn glove. The thumb, palm and fingers of the trapper are shaped to funnel in to the pocket—and it’s a big pocket, to boot. Rather than ordering the standard model NetZero trapper, our features a double-T and skate lace pocket. These two features increase of the overall depth of the pocket, but also increase the puck retention. Puck retention is very important in today’s game, because of how much faster shots are, to ensure the puck stays in the pocket after the save—the most important part of the save! And, of course, skate lace has become so popular and demanded, simply because of how good it looks.
