The CCM Axis A1.9 intermediate is a new take on what CCM has done great for years. With a slim, light stiff design that replaces the Premier P2.9 from years past CCM has brought a new horse to the race. By adapting the LiteXcore technology from the Elite Axis pads, the Axis A1.9 intermediate leg pads bring a new super lightweight dynamic to CCM’s stiffer line of pads.

Source Exclusive Upgrades & Modifications
The source exclusive upgrades on the A1.9 pads are both functional and cosmetic. On the functional side of things, the knee stack is made of both HD and PE foams rather than the only PE construction of the stock A1.9. The Source Exclusive A1.9 goalie pads also feature a single inner break, single outer break which is different than the catalog model which has no outer breaks. Additionally, exclusive colors and cleaner outside logos with PU included make the pad stand out at any rink.

External Material
The Axis A1.9 int pads continue to use the great Speedskin material that CCM has used for awhile now. This material is lighter than synthetic leather and increases slide speeds by reducing the friction of the pad on the ice. This makes the most difference late in the game when the ice is cut up.

Internal Construction
The LiteXcore construction that the Axis A1.9 int takes from the Axis elite pad is one of the biggest changes to the line overall. The LiteXcore is a much slimmer profile when compared to the older Premier line, allowing for less restriction of movement. The slimmer profile has also been built stiffer for harder rebounds and of course to maintain structural integrity over time. The inside sliding edge of the pad is also a complete flat HD foam piece that creates a solid connection with the ice and prevents pucks from getting stuck underneath the sliding edge.

Pad Break
When dealing with a stiffer pad it is important to have a pad break that benefits the construction of the pad itself, especially with growing goalies. On our Source Exclusive model of the Axis A1.9 leg pad we offer a single inner break and a single outer break as a stock option. The slightly increased flex of the pad allows the fivehole to close easier while still maintaining a good amount of stiffness and surface area overall.

Boot Angle & Toe Taper
The Axis 1.9 intermediate goalie pads are built to be in the butterfly with the maximum amount of net coverage. For that reason, the leg pads offer both a 90-degree toe taper, as well as a 90-degree boot. The 90-degree toe taper keeps the entire inside edge of the boot pressed against the ice in the butterfly sealing the boot area exceptionally well. The 90-degree boot also allows for freer movement especially while in a low aggressive stance.

Knee Cradle
Because of the Source Exclusive upgrades the Axis A1.9 has a solid surface for your knee to land on. The knee stack features the same 3D Grip surface from the Axis top end pads that stops the knee slipping off the stack. The Source Exclusive version of the Axis 1.9 offers both HD and PE foams to offer an increase in stiffness and rigidity over the stock knee cradle. The pad also offers a removable knee wrap to either offer a tighter or looser fit depending on the goalies preference, or if they wear knee pads or not.

Strapping
The QMSS Strapping system returns to the Axis 1.9 intermediate leg pads, and for good reason. The lightweight and secure velcro strapping system works well in tandem with the break of the pad and the LiteXcore to provide a familiar loose feeling that allows for the best possible pad rotation. The bungee strapping works well in tandem with the 90-degree boot to allow the goalies skate to drop to the ice just as effectively to provide the most powerful pushes.

Sizes & Colors
The Source Exclusive version of the A1.9 comes in lots of great colours. All Black, All White, and White/White/Black/Black are standard colors available. For the goalies that want a bit more color, we offer Source for Sports Exclusive colorways in Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vegas Golden Knights. All these pads will be available in 30+1, 31+1 and 32+1 in intermediate sizing.

Goalie Leg Pad Sizing

Sizing up your goalie leg pads is crucial for having total control while moving in the crease. There are two different measurements you can use to project the size of leg pad you should be wearing. The first one is your floor-to-knee measurement, which you can match up with our provided sizing charts to find the size of pad you would wear, before plus sizing. The second is the sum of your skate size, mid-ankle-to-mid-knee measurement, and your mid-knee-to-mid-thigh measurement. This measurement gives you a rough idea of what overall size pad you should purchase.

Sizing before Purchase
For measuring your floor-to-knee:

    1. In your bare feet, place the beginning of your soft measuring tape at the inside of the bottom of your foot.
    2. Slightly bend your knee.
    3. Run the soft measuring tape up your shin, to the middle of your knee.
    4. Match your floor-to-knee measurement with our provided sizing charts.

Skate size + mid-ankle-to-mid-knee + mid-knee-to-mid-thigh
    1. Take your skate size (for example, size 10).
    2. Start your soft measuring tape at the inside of your mid-ankle, and run it up to your mid-knee (for example, 18 inches).
    3. Now, from your mid-knee, run your soft measuring tape to your mid-thigh (for example, 7 inches).
    4. Add your measurements together (10 + 18 + 7 = 35 inches).
    5. This means you should be looking into a 35” pad, give or take.

It should be noted that these measurements line you up for an accurate fit, and not a fit that is intended for growing room. Also, different brands size differently, meaning a 35” pad in one can be a 34” or 36” in another.

Sizing after Purchase
Once you have your new leg pads, you’ll need to make sure they fit you properly. To do so, you’ll need to put the pads on with your skates, as if you are about to go on the ice. There a couple things to do to check size, once you have the pads on:

    1. Stand straight, bring your feet together. This will show you the overall height of the pad, while on. Your pads should not, in any case, surpass your hips. Realistically, you want the top of your pad coming up to half-way point of your thighs. A pad fitted for growing room will be a little taller, so a little above the half-way point is normal. In any case, your preferences can alter these suggestions.
    2. Secondly, go in your stance, keep your hands in a ready position, and drop to your butterfly. Without moving your legs to correct your butterfly, bring your heels together. This is where you assess your knee position. For a perfect fit, you want the middle of your knee to sit directly on the centre of the knee stack. If you’re looking for growing room, you want the middle of your knee to land roughly 1.5” below the centre of the knee stack—1” for junior.

Additional Information
Not getting a complete seal while in your butterfly?

If you are having trouble getting a full seal in your new pads, it may be the way you’re strapping them up. If this is the case for you, make sure your boot strap and top (above knee) straps are loosened up a bit. The reason you want these straps loose is because they have a direct effect on the rotation of the pad. Therefore, having a loose boot strap makes it easy for your foot and ankle to rotate as the pad moves; same goes for the top straps, as you do not want them pulling down too hard on the thigh rise.
