New to 2020 is Bauer’s Supreme UltraSonic Chest Protector. Last year we saw Bauer make their best chest to date with the 2X Pro, and this year Bauer is back again and better than ever. The UltraSonic Chest & Arm has many new upgrades like the redesigned arms, new suspenders slots on the shoulders, and pant connection cords. The new Supreme UltraSonic Chest Protector is sure not to disappoint.
External Material
The exterior of the UltraSonic Chest is covered almost entirely in nylon and mesh to provide great breathability and durability. Bauer has also lined the inner belly with their ThermoCore liner material to keep you cool during the game and help fight against bacteria and odor. The ThermoCore liner also dries well, which is good for goalies that play often.
Internal Foams
The Bauer UltraSonic chest uses a combo of molded EPP foams along with their Shock-Lite technology. Poron XRD is also implemented into the sternum plate for reinforced protection. This combination of foams works in creating maximum protection while not sacrificing lightweight performance.
Shoulder Caps
The Supreme UltraSonic chest features a sewn-in shoulder cap. The construction of the caps include Bauer’s Shock-Lite tech, EPP Foam, and plastic inserts. This combo of material makes for a durable and protective shoulder cap.
Adjustable Arms
The Bauer Ultra Sonic features laced-in arms that are adjustable by 2” in length, which allows you to customize the fit of the arms.
Elbow Caps
Bauer has redesigned their elbow caps shape for 2020, while adding their new Hypersense liner. The redesigned elbow caps are segmented allowing for freedom of mobility and added comfort. The makeup of the elbow caps will be a hard plastic covered in a soft foam with the hypersense liner.
Back Straps
Bauer has gone all out on the back straps making sure you have tons of options when it comes to strapping your chest up. It will feature two elastic straps running along your back as well as a collar adjustment for the shoulder floaters and lastly a fully adjustable shoulder velcro. Given all the customization Bauer has created, this chest will offer a next level fit.
Sizes, Colors & Customization
The Bauer Supreme UltraSonic Chest Protector is only available in Senior sizing, and is available in sizes Small through Extra-Large. The colorway is a traditional supreme black base with yellow accents. The UltraSonic will be available on Bauer’s customizer to get unique colourways.

First of all, a few caveats: I use it in seniors' rec-hockey, and I can compare it only against the older ones I've had, not to any other current makes and models.
Here goes: Good protection on chest, shoulders and arms, as well as a good size back plate. Good adjustability, lots of velcro tabs in the right spots, and strings to adjust arm length by about 2". The up-and-down moving "levered" mid-arm protection segment looks odd but works well. The whole unit was a bit stiff initially but become more supple after a few ice sessions. The shoulder pads do not interfere too much with the mask when turning head side-to-side. Overall, a much better unit than the two older ones I had before.
Two potential considerations: First, although the padding covers the arms well (i.e., no gaps,) the material used on those areas may may not be thick/dense enough for very hard shots. Second, the two elastic back straps' clips are hard to locate once the unit is donned. They are there...somewhere, so it's simply a matter of getting used to while donning the gear, and obviously easier for more flexible younger goalies!
Overall, I'm very happy with this unit, and would recommend it to others, keeping the above stated caveats in mind. I took a gamble ordering it online, but it worked out well, thanks to a phone chat with a knowledgeable staff member. However, as the models, materials etc. change, it's best to visit a store that has different makes and models on display, try them on, and pick the one that fits you and your level of play the best.

Goalie Chest Protector Sizing
Sizing a chest protector is important to ensure the goaltenders range of motion is uninhibited, while still offering complete coverage from impact. There are steps necessary to finding the right fit in your chest protector, and the first is to know your measurements. Here at The Hockey Shop, we like to use two measurements: torso length and arm span. Once you have these two measurements, match your measurements to our sizing charts.
Sizing your Chest Protector
After receiving your chest protector, you are going to want to check if the size fits the following criteria:
- 1. The arms end just before your wrist. This is important because you want to ensure that the wrist portion of the arms do not interfere with your blocker and catcher—this still provides adequate growing room for the blocker and trapper, which usually last you 1 to 2 years. Depending on the model, adjustable arms may be an offered feature, which is an added bonus for goaltenders that are still growing.
2. Your elbows fit securely in to the pocket of the elbow protection, and do not shift too far away from them. Keep in mind, arms usually have to be adjusted while putting on your chest & arm. Use the adjustable arm features where given to give you an optimal fit.
3. Make sure the shoulders of the chest & arm are sitting comfortably atop, and wrapped around your shoulders. This can be seen visually by looking at the collar of the chest & arm. You want the collar to sit slightly above your clavicle, but not too high that it interferes with the bottom of your goalie mask.
Each brand of chest & arms will have not only a different shape, but also a slightly different fit. We highly recommend having one of our Goalie Specialists to assist you in optimizing the fit of your Chest Protector. If you can't make it into the store, give us a call so we can walk you through it.
