Coveted 906 Pro Senior Goalie Mask

The Coveted 906 mask is a great step up from their A5 mask and rivals the competition while also being lighter and cheaper than most pro level masks. This mask also has some pros switching to it such as Malcolm Subban of the Vegas Golden Knights. This mask puts Coveted on the mask radar as a serious competitor.

Coveted

Coveted is a smaller Canadian brand specializing in masks and foam. They are great with customer service and provide a 3 year warranty on their retail masks, that’s way longer than the typical 3 month warranty that most helmets come with. Another bonus from the coveted brand is that their A5 small and medium masks use the same shell therefore once you’ve outgrown the junior small, Coveted will replace the foam for a small fee and make the mask fit as a medium. Coveted also makes the only junior mask with a fiberglass base providing much more protection and the ability to have a custom paint job.

Design

If this mask looks familiar, that may be because it was modeled after other previously iconic goalie masks. Designed for a slimmer profile, the 906 mask also sports specific ridges along forehead and crown as well as a tapered design on the chin to help deflect pucks away with less impact. These ridges are much more pronounced that seen on the A5 and allows coveted to look more similar to other top masks in the goalie world. There is also a curvature to the chin that allows the mask and chest protector to work seamlessly together to minimize interference.

Fit

This mask has a snug feeling design to feel protected while also having more room around the chin and cheeks. This mask comes in 4 different sizes, small through XL although as with the A5 mask, the small and medium do fit similar to junior masks.

Shell

The composition of this mask is what you’d expect out of a pro mask. First off, we start with fiberglass base which is a must have if you’re playing any sort of competitive hockey. Coveted has also reinforced the fiberglass with Kevlar for an added level of durability and protection. Lastly, coveted adds in a full layer of carbon fiber to the interior of the mask to add that final touch of rigidness. Coveted bonds all the layers together using epoxy-resin in order to really seal and mold the layers together and create the shell. Lastly they add a dual stage base and gloss finish to the mask for the final look.

Liner

On the inside of the helmet, Coveted used a soft black die cut foam to provide comfort and protection while also hiding the looks of the foam due to its black nature. The foam in this mask provides a solid wrap around the users head and feels somewhat similar to other foams on the market.

The chin cup in the Coveted mask is similar to what they have used in the past. Has an adjustable Velcro strapping like most other masks to adjust the depth of the mask and chin. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the chin cup and would most likely opt to replace it with something I find a bit more comfortable.

The strapping on the 906 provides an open backplate providing a clean look and great area for painting. This strapping has 5-point adjustments allowing it to fit to your head comfortably.

Cage

The coveted mask comes with a CSA approved stainless steel cage with round bars. The look of the cage has a similar style to the Bauer profile cage.

Goalie Mask Sizing

When purchasing a new goalie mask, it is crucial to ensure that it fits properly. Even entry-level masks with a proper fit will do a better job at protecting the head compared to a superior model that is not fitted properly. Unlike other pieces of goalie equipment, we don't typically size goalie masks for growth as a) it sacrifices protection and b) the foams inside the mask will expand over time creating more room for the head.

What Size Goalie Mask Am I?

The first step is to approximate your size using the sizing charts listed on any individual mask’s product page on our website; usually this is accomplished by matching a head circumference and/or hat size to a given mask size. When measuring your head’s circumference, it is important to measure at approximately 1” above the eyebrows while keeping the tape measure parallel (at the “hat line”) around the entire head. In addition, when using hat sizes should be those of fitted hats that aren’t overly tight or loose.

Sizing & Fitting A Goal Mask Properly

Once a size has been established there are four parameters the goaltender should be looking for:

  • 1) The top edge of the window (opening inside the cage) is about 1” above the eyebrows and the sweatband inside the mask sits directly on the skin (ie. there is no gap between the mask and forehead).
  • 2) The backplate hugs the back of the goaltender’s head and its edges don’t extend past the edges of the mask’s shell. Here, we want to reduce the possibility for gaps at the back of the goaltender’s head as well as ensuring the head is secure inside the mask. It should be noted, that if all other parameters are met as far as fitting is concerned, the backplate extending a little too far isn’t of major concern.
  • 3) The chin cup is tightened such that it is worn securely against the chin and prevents the mask from shifting up and down while on the head.
  • 4) The temples and/or cheeks are snug against the foam of the mask such that there are little to no visible gaps on each side of the head and prevents the mask from shifting laterally while on the head.

Once these have been accounted for an indicator of good fit is if the mask shifts on the head. Try grabbing the cage and shaking the mask back and forth – if the mask forces your head to move (rather than the mask moving on your head) you’ve got a great fit!

General Goalie Mask Upkeep & Maintenance

Be sure to check your fit every few months, specifically compressed foams inside the goalie mask. You also want to keep an eye on dented cages and stretched harnesses. These will happen overtime through regular use, and can compromise fit and safety. If you are at all worried about the fit or safety of your current mask, do not hesitate to contact one of our goalie experts for advice.

Great Mask, Worth the Price

As a smaller (5'9) goalie, the boys in beer league are steadily trying to go high and my 9 year old Bauer bucket wasn't cutting it anymore. Played with this beauty about 8-10 times before things shut down around here in March, and have taken a shot to the head pretty much every session. Pucks that would've been full-on ringers in the old mask just kind of glance off it or have a solid thud. It's super comfortable to wear and protective. Sight lines are excellent, I've been able to attach a throat dangler to it without any impact to vision or mobility, and since it's my first carbon fiber mask, it's much lighter than my old one. Bonus points for the great warranty as well. Just an all-around awesome mask.

Sweatband is super absorbent and easy to throw in the wash. The trade-off is that obviously it doesn't dry as quickly. Only knock is that I've almost pulled off one of the little sticky things that affixes the sweatband to the mask.

Over 30 years of pure hockey passion.
