The Bauer Vapor 3X Intermediate Goalie Leg Pads have gotten more than just a refresh for 2021. With the same StabiliFlex knee block, upgraded materials and a lightweight core, the 3X is by far the best iteration of a pro pad at a mid line price point we’ve ever seen.
External Material
Bauer uses their synthetic leather with C.O.R.Tech skin on the new Vapor 3X pads. This promotes harder, faster rebounds than other pads found on the market especially when combined with the harder, denser cores and composite reinforcement seen in the 3X pads.
Internal Construction
The 3X pads use a Dynamic Flex Core with Curv composite inserts in the thigh rise. The core gives the pad its soft, pre curved shape and feel while the composite insert and firm face of the pad give the 3X it's hot rebounds and durability.
Pad Break
Pairing a flex point both above and below the knee with a pre curved shape, Bauer gave the pad a soft, forgiving feel with good butterfly seal.
Boot Angle & Toe Taper
The 3X features the same ultra soft, Free-Flex 110 Degree Boot as the Hyperlite pad. The new boot sits flatter than the 2X allowing the pad to sit deeper onto your leg giving a more attached feel to the pad.
Knee Cradle
The 3X pads get the same StabiliFlex knee block seen on the Hyperlite pad. First seen in the Ultrasonic line, this design creates an ultra stiff knee block that’s built right into the core of the pad. There are many advantages to this design mainly that the goalie is able to drive straight through the knee block into the butterfly without losing any energy in the process.
Strapping
Bauer kept their Tune Fit strapping setup but had to make a few adjustments to accommodate the new knee and calf blocks. The knee strap is the same as the one seen on the Ultrasonic featuring an adjustable velcro attachment to the back of the knee block. The updated “Y” shaped calf strap has an adjustment built more like that seen on the knee to work with the Balance Plate while maintaining the feel of the original Tune Fit strapping seen on the 2X.
Colors & Sizes
The 3X line comes stock in all White, all Black, White/Black, White/Blue, White/Navy and White/Red. The 3X Intermediate Leg Pads are available in sizes XS (29") thru L (32").

Deciding your Goalie Pads size is crucial for having total control while moving in the crease. Sizing your pads properly is the difference between getting that perfect seal on your butterfly, and feeling clunky or unprotected in the net. Below we have compiled some information to better assist you in deciding which size is right for you.
Floor-To-Knee Measurement
Your Floor-To-Knee measurement will give you a good indication as to what "Pad Size" you will need. This measurement can be matched up with the provided sizing chart above.
How to Measure your Floor-To-Knee
What to look for when trying on your new pads.
Once you have your new leg pads, you’ll need to make sure they fit you properly. To do so, you’ll need to put the pads on with your skates. There a couple things to do to check size, once you have the pads on:
1. Stand straight and bring your feet together. This will show you the overall height of the pad, while on. Your pads should not be taller than your hips. Ideally you want the top of your pad at the half-way point of your thighs. A pad fitted for a young growing goaltender can be a little taller, so a little above the half-way point is normal.
2. Next you want to get in your stance, keep your hands in a ready position, and drop to your butterfly. Without moving your legs to correct your butterfly, bring your heels together. This is where you assess your knee position. For a proper fit, you want the middle of your knee to sit directly on the center of the knee stack. If you’re looking for growing room, you want the middle of your knee to land roughly 1.5” below the center of the knee stack (1” for JR).
Not getting a complete seal while in your butterfly?
If you're having trouble getting a full seal in your new pads, it may be the way you’re strapping them up. Make sure your boot strap and top straps (above knee) are loosened up a bit. The reason you want these straps loose is because they have a direct effect on the rotation of the pad. Having a loose boot strap makes it easy for your foot and ankle to rotate as the pad moves. Same goes for the top straps, as you don't want them pulling down too hard on the thigh rise.
