Brian's Optik 2 Chest Protector Review

Rather than just going with a design refinement, Brian’s has elected to go with a redesign of the original OPTiK chest protector. Having worn Brian’s chests in the past, I tend to get excited every time I see a new chest being released by them. This time I'm beyond excited! From the first time I tried it on, I knew Brian’s had a winner. Let’s take a closer look at what's changed from the original OPTiK and what makes it a top tier consideration for any goalie.

Shoulder Floaters

Starting with the shoulder floaters, the OPTiK 2, features a new squared-off shoulder floater. This gives the chest a boxier look from the middle of the chest up to the shoulders. The floaters are attached to the back plate with Velcro, allowing the goalie full adjustability to dial in their fit. The shoulder floaters are made with lightweight high-density foams.

Shoulder Cap

A new shoulder cap has also been added to the OPTiK 2 that provides a wider presence to the chest as well as tonnes of coverage protection for the shoulder cap area.

Arms

The arms have been simplified, making them lightweight while retaining top-level protection. The addition of Airknit over the *E Foam* and high-density foams gives the arms a rich look. A new feature that has been added over previous models is a wrist pad that covers the backhand of the chest. This will give the goalie some extra protection when in a glove up position. This additional wrist pad has been added to the elbow that had already provided superior coverage and protection in the past.

Adjustable Arms

The arms are attached via Velcro to the body of the chest. This allows for easy adjustment to dial in the fit for your specific arm length.

The Body

The body of the OPTiK 2 has the most similarities to its predecessor. The Hex Air collar carries over from last year. This allows you to easily adjust the neckline while providing additional sternum and collar bone protection. The main body pad features High-density/E Foam segmented blocks to protect the body. Additional pads wrap around the ribs nicely to provide overall protection and coverage.

Removable Rib Pillows

New rib pillows have been added to the chest. These pads are attached with Velcro and can be removed if desired. Brian’s Smart Strap side closer has made its return to the chest as well. This provides easy adjustment without the worry of breaking a plastic buckle.

Final Thoughts

As with any piece of equipment, there will be some break-in time. However, I found that that was quickly offset by the out of box mobility once I dialed in my fit. I felt confident In my saves with no concerns about stingers. My profile in the net looks great and I don’t feel that I’m sacrificing any coverage.

To sum it all up, adjustability, mobility, elite-level protection, made in Canada quality and to top it all off a great look! It’s hard to say much more about this chest as it offers something for every goalie. Make sure to follow us on social media, by Liking us on Facebook, and following us on Instagram and Twitter!
