Bauer Supreme 2S Pro Skates

There’s no point hiding our excitement; we’re ecstatic about the Bauer 2S Pro skate launch. Bauer didn’t just give this skate a facelift, they tuned up the horsepower and added leather seats. Bauer Hockey has continued to build on their highly successful line of Supreme Hockey Skates, and the 2S Pro is no exception. While continuously improving off the same design platform for over a decade has created many new versions, the added technology season after season always makes for an exciting Summer when the latest lineup lands on our skate wall.

The Bauer Supreme 2S Pro for 2018 replaces the Bauer Supreme 1S which arrived in 2016. While keeping a similar look, many new features have been added to keep those dedicated Supreme followers interested. Black carbon-coated steel, moldable tongues/insoles and custom lacing… Trust me, these upgrades look better than they sound, and the performance benefits are legit. We’ll get into it.

The Bauer Supreme line is a proven model, specifically catering to the Mid Profile foot shape. That fit story has not changed and has only improved. Before we go into too much detail on the changes, here is the Supreme 2S Pro launch details and tech/spec at a glance.

At First Glance

Skate design has come a long way since the original Supreme skates launched. The primary black boot is what skaters want. Maybe it’s the contrast with the ice, but it’s a crowd favourite. You can’t mess with the classic look. The minor yellow accents are like streaks of lightning and add a subtle flare to this traditional looking piece of art. All the composite accents follow the contours of the boot. All around, these skates live up to the Supreme legacy and are clearly the flagship model on the wall.

Black Steel – LS5 Carbon

This is something we have been eagerly waiting for Bauer to release. For years we’ve been aware of the benefits that carbon-coated steel offers, and it was only a matter of time before this material was stock on elite skates. Why does it matter?

Stainless steel is a sturdy material and cuts through the ice with ease, but as we all know, a sharpening won’t last forever. Eventually, the sharpening on a steel runner will wear down. Why don’t manufacturers use a harder material? The softness of a steel runner serves a purpose. The steel will bend slightly when turning and stopping. This takes some stress off your joints and smooths out the skating experience. It’s also easier to achieve a high-quality finish on stainless steel over a hardened material.

So how do we get smooth skating AND quality, durable sharpening? Carbon-coated steel.

It’s like an Oreo. The black coating creates a hardened surface on either side of the blade, while the middle is standard stainless steel. The carbon coating does not extend over the hollow that you skate on. The coating is only on the blade edges. All that matters is how it feels on the ice. In our testing, the LS5 steel had what seemed like an increase in edge bite. With that said, you could drop to a shallower hollow to take advantage of increased glide while maintaining the same amount of control. Combine increased sharpening life with improved performance and this steel is a worthwhile upgrade.

A Fit Like No Other

The classic Supreme fit isn’t going anywhere. Bauer has had the anatomical boot shape dialled in for years now. For the diehard Supreme skaters, putting on a pair of 2S Pro skates will be a familiar feeling.

What’s new? Upgraded thermoformable fit from top to bottom. It’s the name of the game. From composite boot to the tongue, to the footbed, to outsole, you can customize the fit precisely to your foot. Skate ovens can do beautiful things, and the 2S Pro is built to make magic happen.

3D-Lasted Carbon Curv Composite Boot

Let’s start with the boot. 3D-lasted Carbon Curv Composite. Bauer’s patented boot material is thermoformable and ultra-lightweight without sacrificing protection. Thermoformable composite is a standard these days, but Bauer’s current iteration of the Curv material is one of the best we’ve seen.

You’ll notice the smooth anatomical contours around the heel cup and ankle bones. This 3D-last provides a framework that helps secure your foot in the boot. The next step is the thermoformable. After a short bake in a Bauer skate oven, the Curv material will adjust and form around your unique foot shape and bone structure. It’s a warm hug for about 10 minutes. Your feet will thank you.

Reflex Pro Tongue

Even if you traditionally rock “tongues out,” this comfortable new design may cause you to tuck those tongues in. The Reflex Pro Tongue offers a three-piece, 52oz felt tongue with moldable inserts. We can honestly say the skate provides a customizable fit inside and out with this swanky new feature. You might recognize the Reflex tongue from the Vapor 1X skate. The 2S Pro version features a couple of modifications that make it unique. The base is a mix of both white and black 52oz felt. The two-tone felt offers a nice contrast, and you avoid the “weathered” look of a well-used white felt tongue in the lower boot.

The facing of the tongue has composite moulded inserts that offer added protection without sacrificing mobility. You’ll recognize this design from the 1X right away, but there is a new addition. The yellow inserts in between the composite inserts are intended to help spring your foot back to neutral when in a forward flexion position. The jury is out on this one, but the logic is there. The tongue internal is moldable and will adjust to the volume depth of your instep. The injected foams help with forward flexion and comfort.

Customizable Lacing?

When I first read about this feature, I thought a new skate lace technology was going to change my life. However, it is the eyelet configuration that is turning heads. Bauer changed its eyelet system to add three additional options in-between the top 4 eyelets. The new three eyelets are a bit closer to the ankle bone and are offset with the top 4. This allows you to customize your lacing style to optimize comfort and performance.

We’ve seen custom lacing at the pro level for some time as skating coaches look for an edge to balance support and mobility. Some players drop an eyelet, some drop two, some skip an eyelet, some skip a few. The primary purpose of the extra eyelets will be to snug up the fit for someone with smaller ankles. But I’d recommend messing around with the configuration of the laces to see what’s most comfortable for you. You’d be amazed at the difference it can make for you on the ice.

Injection Molded Eyelet System

The injected moulded eyelet system on the 2S Pro is slightly different than the 1S. The material used has been softened up a bit to allow the lower half to wrap around the forefoot. The upper half straightens out to allow for proper forward flexion. The eyelets themselves feature the T-shaped locking mechanism to keep laces tight during a game. For some players, this is a huge deal. If you often find yourself re-tying your laces between shifts or periods, these eyelets will help.

A Peek Inside

You will find a new liner called the Lock-Fit Pro. It’s a two-tier liner system that is popular among pros. The upper half is moisture wicking material that keeps your feet as dry as possible. Hockey is a high-intensity sport; there will be sweat. The lower half is a grippy fabric that keeps your heel from slipping, so you get the most out of each stride.

The Total Edge Comfort package has carried over from its predecessor with minimal change, as it is sometimes difficult to improve perfection. By providing padding directly where the skate meets the ankle on tight turns or where the skate meets the shin pad on long strides, the predictable irritation or rubbing is now a thing of the past.

C-Flex Technology Tendon Guard with Custom Inserts

Another carryover from the 1S skate, the C-Flex tendon guard offers lightweight, mobile protection to the Achilles tendon. Bauer has dialled in this system, and there’s no need to worry about durability. Being able to customize the level of flexion is just another way you can customize these skates to your preference.

Bauer Supreme 2S Pro Skates

Speed Plate 2.0 Footbed

Bauer’s first crack at a thermoformable insole was a success, but there was room for improvement. The blue plastic is gone. The materials have been completely re-engineered to improve comfort and durability. Bauer Speed Plate 2.0 footbed provides the ultimate support and comes standard in every 2S Pro Skate. This insole alone has its own fit story and features, including:

  • Full thermoformable recovery alloy composite for fit customization.
  • Anatomical metatarsal support pad for enhanced power output.
  • Mid-density top foam covers high impact areas for premium comfort.
  • Easy trim to fit cut line indicators.
  • Enhance stabilizing grip applications further support the foot.

Overall, this footbed is a significant upgrade over Speed Plate 1.0. Time will tell how it holds up, but we think the steps taken to improve durability are solid.

Bauer Supreme 2S Pro Skates

Full Composite Vented Outsole

The vented outsole is another carryover feature from previous models. The composite outsole is thermoformable and has ventilation in the midsole to keep your feet cool and dry. Keep your feet cool? On ice? You’d be surprised how warm feet can get at high intensity without this ventilation. A small detail that Bauer has added for years and felt no need to change.

Final Thoughts

The Bauer 2S Pro is the cream of the crop. It is hard to mess up such a successful line of skates, and Bauer has made all the right changes to keep this skate on point.

I have been lucky enough to view and hold these skates in person. However, I am excited to share our on-ice review, breaking down any pros and cons of this performance product, along with comparing it to it to the competition and ranking the skate based on fit, performance and durability. Stay tuned!
